Re: Indian feather
That is, without doubt, my all time favourite jumpsuit! I have always envied the audience viewing the suit for the very first time, in Huntsville, during the May 31st '75 afternoon show! You can imagine my suprise when Graceland had the suit out on display during Elvis Week '97! I was in heaven!

There's a show from 11-76 where he wore it. He looked great that night.

Re: Indian feather
I never really cared for the Indian Feather much, until I saw it in person.
Very beautiful & impressive in reality.
All my best,

PS - I've always like the "Sundial" jumpsuit, too.

Re: Indian feather
I like many of the jumpsuits. I thought he looked great during any of the four shows at Madison Square Garden. The Aloha suit is definitely a favorite, as is the Red Burning Love suit. The Indian Feather suit is indeed a favorite. However, he was on the right track with his attire during the March 1975 Vegas gig and the April / May tour.
It just didn't last too long.

Now, the "Gypsy" jumpsuit is one that I've always thought was horrible.Rob wrote:The sundial and the gypsy suit are tied.
Again, however, . . . . I changed my perception of it a bit after seeing in person.
IMO, photographs / footage just don't really do justice to some of these items in reality; if you add EP to that equation, I'm sure it is even more so.
I've kind of learned not to criticize the jumpsuits too much based on limited perception. Plus, they were really cool for the time period (which was the era I discovered EP and became a fan) ---> so I'll always like them.
EP wore them because he wanted to achieve a larger-than-life image while on stage = Mission Accomplished.
To some, it was Memphis Flash on overdrive, but that was what EP was all about.
All my best,

As far as jumpsuits go, . . . . one of my favorites (& EP's):
This is how I like to remember and think of the 70's EP.
Super-cool stuff, from a Truly Original Super Celebrity Legend.

Re: Indian feather
Always remember who else was on the road in the mid 70s, and what they were wearing: Elton John, KISS, David Bowie, etc. Perspective matters. And N8 is right, you gain appreciation for the work and art that went into these outfits when you see them up close.

Re: Indian feather
That initial photo is a beautiful George Hill original; I always loved that step frozen in time for some reason. It's part of my set I purchased from him back in the day.
I remember that suit being "gasp-worthy" when he wore it in Memphis '75. We were certainly all impressed by its striking detail.
I'm with N880EP, though.... the '72 shot is how I tend to remember Elvis in the 1970s because that is how he looked when I first saw him in person. He looked better than fantastic in 1969/1970, but that's not the Elvis that automatically springs to my mind.... it's the "Captain Marvel" Elvis with the flowing cape that gets me every time. The "Black Matador". the "Red Matador", and the "Porthole" costumes. Yeah, buddy.
If I ever could afford to, I'd love to have one of those costumes made for myself.... just to see what it felt like to put all that on. I'd never wear it in public, but I'd love to know what it was like to get "suited up" like that.

Brilliant shot - I've seen this one before somewhere...Sean Shaver?
Maybe we are a bit too used to the shot, but the cover of Elvis Presley Boulevard is just amazing - even if slightly modified!

Re: Indian feather
That's a key point that many seem to forget. Back in the 70's, much of the excitement was not only to see Elvis, but to see the outfit he would be wearing.N880EP wrote:I've kind of learned not to criticize the jumpsuits too much based on limited perception. He always looked quite stunning under the colored lights.

Re: Indian feather
I can imagine - you can see that in some of the amateur videos, but the glittering of the stones couldn't be captured either by photo or film, so I've been told.He always looked quite stunning under the colored lights
It is just a shame that the Indian feather was subject to much ridicule when jouralists used the worst ever Elvis pictures to support their sleazy stories about our hero:

I would also take that statement and apply it all the way back to Hawaii, 1961.
Trust me, no photos can ever come close to capturing the reality of what EP's true appearance must have been like on stage for that event. Add in the audio . . . . . and it is mind blowing to contemplate.
I think it applies to all decades of EP's career.

I really enjoyed this thread, with the comments from other hardcore EP fans.

I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

Re: Indian feather
The laser suit that was in the works for late 1977 most likely would have trumped all that came before.

Re: Indian feather
Indeed, Rob.... the outfit was a big part of the anticipation. How would he "top" the last one we saw him wear, etc.? I can remember that it was three concerts before we finally saw him wear the "trademark" white jumpsuit. When we saw him wear the "Porthole" outfit in Ft. Worth in June '72 I distinctly remember the way that suit's ornamentation would reflect the stage lighting. Very almost "laser-like" in itself, but it's something I've never seen captured in a photograph of Elvis wearing that particular outfit.Rob wrote:That's a key point that many seem to forget. Like N880EP said.... no image, video, or other media can compare to actually being there for an Elvis stage performance. Even in his worst years.
