Is there a picture of the ballpark bigger than this anywhere?

Image

Prior to it burning down in 1960 it was home to the Memphis Chicks (Chickasaws), the southern minor league team that through most of its life was an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Though in 1958 it was an affiliate of the Boston Red sox. Bill Burk told me a story of a game he was at that was an exhibition game between the Red sox and Chicks and Ted Williams hit one of (in not the ) furthest home runs from th park. The ball landed in his aunts yard which he later retrieved and had Ted sign.

I believe the ballpark was situated in the area opposite Baptist Memorial on the southside over Union! I could be wrong!

Here is an aerial shot of Russwood Park, from the Freeman/Hazen book, Memphis - Elvis Style. The park was located on Madison Avenue, just north of Union.

KHoots, if you notice this photo (taken from Union) is looking north! Your scan shows the north wing of the Baptist, as does this image! So, the ballpark was indeed behind Presley's hospital room! The top of the building (to the right of your image) is evident in the colour post card!

Also notice that six floors have been added to the BMH in the colour photo.

That's odd, you think they actually added the floors or just doctored the photo?

That's good.

A 'doctored' picture of a 'hospital' - kinda apt, really.

It was taken on July 19th '75 in Uniondale, enroute back to the Hilton after his evening gig at the Nassau Coliseum.
