PHS Location!

I have been fortunate to of been able to visit this landmark, back in '95 whilst I was on holiday! This cone shaped outcropping of lava off Kualoa Point resembles the peasant's chapeau worn by rural Chinese - thus the name: Chinaman's Hat. The reef surrounding the island supports an abundance of marine life and is one of the O'ahu's best offshore islands. You can see Chinaman's Hat from numerous vantage points along the coast but the best view is to actually go out to the island. You can walk there during low tide but the best way to get there is via kayak.

On the island is a small beach nestled in a secluded cove. There is also a small cave carved out of lava and a steep volcanic cone perfect for exploring. The view of the Koolau Mountains, Mokapun peninsula, Kahaluu, Kaneohe, and Kailua is unmatched.
Directions:
Off the Kamehameha Highway offshore from the Kualoa Point State Recreation Area, approximately 45 minute drive from Honolulu.
Useful Information:
Climbing the volcanic cone takes about 20 minutes, is strenuous, and can be tricky so be careful.

My pleasure, mate! Yeah, that is one awesome site! I have it up there in my favourites! I regulary check back for updates! I just absolutely love 'then and now' shots! Swithin StCleeve, thank you for the link! However, I have to disagree with your assumption! IMO, I believe this is the (non location) scene where Presley is singing 'Sand Castles'!

Good shot - I've seen it before on line, don't remember where. Here probably!
I think that's a rehearsal for 'House Of Sand'. The girls, the kid, Elvis, all are in exactly the same position during this song in the finished film.

Elvis wears no clothes like this in the film, plus, the song suits the 'end of the day' theme on the beach. It's a lullaby, so Elvis singing it to a sleepy brat sounds right.
And why bikini clad girl dancers for a lullaby? I know this film well, and can't see where else the song would fit in.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that's a rehearsal shot and the chinaman's hat one is Sand Castles. But I could be wrong.

No, you are right. Sue Weigert was there on location to witness the filming of Sand Castles.

These are shot at the Polynesian Culteral Center, North Ohau (2 hrs from HNL). Elvis went back to see a show at Polysnesian in March '77.

BTW: Chinaman's Hat is only 15 min North of Kailua (Elvis last vacation).
