That's interesting. So he delivered the knife to Elvis that day? Is it on display at Graceland?

Here is a page, where Elvis gets mentioned. And a great close-up of the Kempo Karate knife.

I directed Paul to this set of photos way back when. And now there is suddenly new info.

They are wrong on the date - just look at Elvis, if it is 1971 then he's having a really bad day!

I don't know if Elvis had more than one black belt but if he did not then the photos are very easily dated. Well, at least approximately.

Well, Elvis is actually wearing a 6th degree black belt in these photos as you'll see from the photo below. Elvis got promoted to 6th degree on April 2, 1973 by Ed Parker in Parker's International Kenpo Karate Association.

On April 9, 1973 Kang Rhee awards Elvis a seventh degree black belt in his Pasaryo school of karate.

I'd say the photos are from the first week of April 1973, maybe even April 2nd, the day Elvis was promoted to 6th degree black belt.

Brian -- I think the timeline is way off.

A close scrutiny of the images above shows an Elvis from summer 1974, either before or during his Vegas stand in which began in August.

Look at the face, and the sideburns -- it says 1974 to me ->

This is from Vegas in August ->

This is from Memphis on September 9 ->

Also, how does Elvis get promoted from 6th to 7th degree black belt in seven (7) days? That is very unlikely -- the chronology must be off in someone's memory.

Hibben's web site attributes 1974 to the image which started this topic ->

Bear in mind that summer 1974 was when "The New Gladiators" was beginning to pick up steam, and some filming would be done in September.

That Hibben kenpo knives would be be presented to Elvis fits nicely into Presley's idea of creating an "authentic" martial arts film with a "bad ass" in the lead role.

I'll try and explain why I believe the photos are from April 1973 when I get back from work and have the photos and paperwork by my side but I think I can convince you that the photos are most likely from April 1973.

That jumped out at me, as well.

According to "Elvis, Day by Day" Ed Parker promoted Elvis to 6th degree black belt in his International Kenpo Karate Association on April 2, 1973

Acc. same book Elvis and friends (Kang Rhee among them) flew to San Francisco on April 8 to attend Parker's California Karate Championships, but when he discovered the unauthorized use of his name both in the promotion and on the marquee, he left the DelWebb Town House and flew back to L.A., disappointed at what he saw as exploitation by friends.

Acc. same book on April 9:
To assauge some of Elvis' disappointment, Kang Rhee awards Elvis a 7th degree black belt in his Pasaryu school of karate.

As you'll notice from the photo below Elvis does indeed wear a 7th degree black belt along with his Pasaryu Karate Assn. gi in this photo from June 1973. Notice the necklace he used on this tour. Other photos from this tour also show Elvis wearing the same karate gi with his 7th degree black belt.

Image

I very seldom date a photo by his hair style or sideburns as they could look very different from one day to the other but if you look at the karate photo that Doc posted and compare it to the beautiful profile shot in his next photo than you will clearly see that the "tip" of the sideburn in the karate photo is completely missing in the profile shot.

Also, in next photo, why would the inscription on the photo read "Ed DOWNEY" when it is Ed Parker in the photo. Or am I missing something???

Image

Nope my friends, you'll have to come up with some much more convincing proof than Elvis' sideburns if you're gonna convince me that these "knife-photos" are not from April 1973.

I go with 4-73 because of his weight. In 8-74 and 2-73 he was pretty thin. He is not real heavy in the knife photos but he is not in great condition.
