50's Clown Candid

#298201

Post by Melanie »

I found this International News Agency wire photo on eBay. And it occured to me that I have never seen Elvis with a clown or i.e. a person in a Halloween costume. I don't know if this photo is rare, but would you be so kind as to share any information, details. Maybe you even know who those clowns are. Were they famous in their own right?

As a bonus another wire picture. Fortunately it has informative text.

It was taken in oct.'57

Elvis went backstage to meet with Marge and Gower Champion at the Sahara-Hotel in vegas...

The husband and wife dance team wore these festive costumes for their finale;

The Team were also top directors and choreographers...

on a tragic note... Gower died on the very opening night of prehaps his greatest triumph, the 1981 Broadway production of 42nd. Street..

the pic marks perhaps the first time Elvis was out-dressed in a photo.

Here is a pic from the same time.
When I last posted this on here I added the caption:
Elvis: "If you're going to join the act, Charlie, you've got to dress more sensibly; like JD here !"

It wasn't funny the first time, either.

Thank you all for your participation in this thread and the other. The information. And the alternate shot. I missed it last time. Tragic what happened to Gower.

Well, if I had my choice, I think I'd choose Elvis's attire!

October was a busy month for our hero, with several semi-controversial shows in SF and LA amongst the clowns.

Here's Elvis in costume, from designer Sy Devore's 1957 Halloween party, with actress Jeanne Carmen, dressed as a "squaw":

That's a classic Ernest C. Withers image of Elvis with Rufus Thomas -- besides being a DJ, Rufus cut the 1953 SUN recording of "Tiger Man" that Presley so adored -- at the WDIA "Goodwill Revue," December 7, 1956.

Elvis did not perform that night, but the mostly black crowd roared their approval when he appeared on stage for a few minutes.

... fantastic illustration, Elton, of the EP paintbox!!!

Look at the lay out, and handlettering of his name! It makes a

perfect 10 inch album cover. What a beauty! It makes one wish,

the70s designs - in general - never happened! Take notice,

deadringer... :D

Thanks, Elton! Where did you find it? ebay...?
