Post here your Elvis' pictures

More 50's pics!! Help me on dating them, or just enjoy!

Wed Mar 29, 2006 12:18 am

Hey you guys!!

I have had some issues with my computer and been working like crazy, so I have not been able to post here as I would have wanted. Been missing it like crazy... I can see that there are mostly 60's and 70's photos beeing shown and discussed, that's fine, Elvis was cool at all times (well pretty much all the time, anyway). But I don't know much about the 60's and 70's photos, so unfortunently I can't help much there. So I hope you people won't mind me trying to get some attention to these 50's photos.

I know this first one was sported on the cover of the 50's-box, but I don't think I have ever stumbled upon a date for it?
Image Image Image Image Image

I was trying to find it in Elvis Day By Day, but I couldn't. I know that Elvis was given this hat by his old boss at the Lowe's State Theatre in Memphis, but when was it? In any case, Elvis' hair looks really weird!
Image

Are these two from Cleveland November 23, 1956?
Image Image

What about these two?
Image Image
The first one I had named November 13, 1956. I can't remember why though. Could it be correct?

Appearently Elvis is handed a gold record for Heartbreak Hotel (something I thought Milton Berle gave him... hmmm..).
Image

Elvis paying Dewey Phillips and some other guy (owner of the store?) a visit at the Poplar Tunes Record Shop in Memphis.
Image Image Image Image

Elvis showing off the new line of products in his name. From the set of Love Me Tender?
Image

I'm guessing spring of 57.

Have a good one!!

Hi Little Sister, Welcome back, you´ve been dearly missed ;)

The first 5 pix are all from April 21, 1956 in Houston, Tx. The jacket is described as both purple and lavender in 1956 reviews. This should be a piece of the jacket.
Image

I´m not 100% sure of the next but I believe it is from Elvis´ participation in the Shelby United Neighbours campaign on October 1, 1957.

And then, WOW, havent´seen any of those two Cleveland shots before. Course thay are from Cleveland. Thank God you can´t see me drooling over the pix

Next two are from March 17, 1956 in New York for his fifth appearance on the Dorsey show.

Next we see Elvis in Las Vegas on May 4, 1956 with Freddy Martin (who backed Elvis up in Las Vegas) and Hal Maag.

I can´t seem to find the proper date for those next 4 pix. I know I´ve read it somewhere and I believe it was in one of the Memphis papers, but I can´t find the clipping. If memory serves me well, doesn´t always, I believe they were from a TV-spot on a show that Dewey had. January or March 1957.

Pic of Elvis with some of the Elvis-endorsed products early on during the Love Me Tender filming. Probably late August 1956.

My guess is also spring 1957 of those two pix. Elvis´ hair looks very Jailhouse Rockish. But who is that Frank who helped build the "Dog-House" Probably the man on the right above Mrs. Parker.

Well Little Sister, that´s all for me. I´m off to bed, just passed midnight.

Sincerely
Brian

Yes, this is from Cleveland, part of the Lew Allen photo collection. Here are some other photos I took from his exhibition here in Finland.

You can buy some of his prints here:

Also, there will be a book of his photographs:

The fool, thanks for sharing your most valuable information! It is always appreciative! Cheers!

These are some great pix Fool and Funky.

Great to see we´re back on track again with some 1950´s rock´n´roll pix.

Too bad Lew Allen's pix are so expensive. Would have loved them in perfect quality.

Thank you for your quick reply Brian!! Too bad that I had allready gone off to bed, but like you, I needed the sleep.

Great to see the real color of that coat. I love black and white photos, but I think history is being rewritten with them, and Elvis looks a lot more concervative than he actually was. We are missing out on all the flashy colors and materials...

I am glad you liked the Cleveland photos, I actually believe that I have one or two at home, that hasn't been shown here. But I am not sure, will check later.

Great to see one more Las Vegas-photo dated!! We have quite a few photos from there, but not many whom have a date to go with them. So thanks!! If you can find a date for the Poplar-photos, I would love it.I will look in my copy of Day By Day tonight, to see if it mentions anything about that TV spot.

BTW, are those Dorsey-pics taken by Wertheimer?

Thank you Fool for those great links. I have a co-worker who went to Finland just to see that exibition. His daughter loved it!!

Have a good one!

It must be this then. This is from Bill E. Burk´s Images of a legend photo booklet.

Image

When Shelby United Neighbors kicked off its fund drive to raise charitable funds for numerous agencies in the Memphis area, what better person in 1958 to kickoff the drive on WMC-TV than Elvis Presley, already known as the most charitable entertainer in U.S. history. Elvis willingly obliged, appearing before the cameras to ask community support; then making a generous contribution of his own to get the drive started.

Interestingly, the booklet also has the same picture Little Sister posted with Arthur Groom presenting Elvis with Loew´s State usher´s uniform. Unfortunatly, no date given for this one either. But Elvis´ hair suggests this is indeed from the same occasion.

Could it be Frank Folsom, the president of RCA, who can be seen with Elvis in the first photo? There is a photo of him with Elvis in the A Legendary Performer, vol.2 booklet, from this very same occasion. And also on the back cover of your incredibly fantastic book, Brian!

Wed Mar 29, 2006 6:15 pm

Well Little Sister, there just is too less hours in the day. Could easily sit here many more hours than I do. Love this.

Yeah, I love the old black and white photos as well but as you say, Elvis looks much more conservative as he was. He was a real sharp dresser even back then. Some of the expressions the reviewers made back then about Elvis´ clothing are priceless and shows that he did NOT choose the conservative line in stage wear.

Yes, those two March 17 photos are Wertheimer-photos.

Yes Fool, That is one of the pix from the SUN (Shelby United Neighbours) fund raising. I know that Bill Burk wrote 1958 but he didn´t always get the dates right. The pic is from October 1, 1957.

Yeah Fool, it could easily be for Frank Folsom that the Dog-house was built. Didn´t recognize him in the pic.

And Fool, thanks for the kind words. I´m real glad you like my book. Only have a few left and am real proud I managed to sell all 2.000 copies. Maybe I should consider a 1957-continuance in the near future.

Sincerely
Brian

Thank you for your great input Fool. I had never before seen that photo. I find it very interesting to see that this TV performance is never mentioned - yes, it was only broadcasted locally and Elvis didn't sing. But it was a public apperance on TV. Just like the Town And Country with Jimmy Dean in March, and Dance Show with Wink Martindale in June and Hy Gardener Calling in July (am I missing any?). Imagine if they could find this footage?

Here's the Cleveland photo I thought I had. I think it is from Cleveland at least...
Image

Here are a few more I could use some help with:

Image Image Image

Image

Are these two from Memphis July 5, 1956?
Image Image

Is this one from March 17 also?
Image

Here's one with Nick Adams and Eddie Fadal. I'm gussing Texas just 'cause of Eddie. But other than that I am lost.

Memphis May 15, 1956?

That one at the stage door, with the out-of-focus back of the heads of the crowd in the foreground, is the first photo I ever remember seeing of our boy in a UK newspaper !
Image

Surely must be earlier than November, 1956 ?

Brings back a few memories.

Wed Mar 29, 2006 7:15 pm

Glad you´re back to keep me busy Little Sister

I´m doing a behind-the-photo story about the October 1, 1957 pix to be on my website later in the evening.

You missed the TV-appearance on WKNO-TV on September 20, 1957 on Safety Hit Parade.

I just gotta get that 1957-book together. I have all the text ready from the local papers back then. There are SO many great stories to be told.

Your first pic Little Sister is from Troy, Oh. on Nov 24, 1956.

I´m not too sure about the next three but I believe they are from August 1956 tour of Florida and New Orleans. Ger, can you halp out here???

Single pic with girl is from Richmon, Va. on May 16, 1955.

Nope Sis, they´re not from July 5, 1956, they´re from July 4, 1956.

I don´t know the date of the pic where he is reading. It is a fan club news-letter for T. Tommy Cutrer who, I believe, worked from Texarkana.

Elvis with Nick and Eddie is from Waco, Tx October 12, 1956.

Then you have a much better quality pic (than mine) from Oakland, Ca June 3, 1956.

Last pic is from October 29, 1956 in New York. The day after Elvis' 2nd appearance on the Ed Sullivan show he went to the Junco studio where they filmed a new ending for Love Me Tender. If you look closely it should be possible to see that his hair is black in the ending scene where he sings over the end-titles.

Well, that´s about that for this time.

Sincerely
Brian

Yes, sorry, I only just noticed that you'd already dated it in your earlier post !
