Elvis the Puppet-Master --> 1977!
Someone sent me this rather bizarre, slight poignant concert shot.
My guess is it's from Charlotte in February 1977, but if anyone knows for sure, please chime in.
Such a shame the puppet didn't look like Tom Parker . . .

You can really see how young 42 is.
Forever a real shame.

Thanks for sharing. I think I've seen it before but my god these type of photos are depressing.
A worn out suit, in a small auditorium, in a small town, for the nth time, with a frickin mouse puppet on his hand.

His countenance and haircut are both rather bleak.

Seems it's a scan from Erik Lorentzen's Strictly Elvis volume 2; probably the worst photobook I've ever seen.

I completely understand what you're saying, but last time I checked Charlotte was a big city.Thats_all_right wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 5:21 pmThanks for sharing. I think I've seen it before but my god these type of photos are depressing.

Was it that much different in 1977 ??

And a 12000 seat coliseum isn't a 'small auditorium'.minkahed wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 4:44 amI completely understand what you're saying, but last time I checked Charlotte was a big city.Thats_all_right wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 5:21 pmThanks for sharing. Let's not get carried away by outlier examples.
We certainly agree that 1977 was not a great 2/3 of a year for Elvis Presley, and the photo in the OP speaks to that.

And yes, I wholly agree with your assessment of Elvis' final year with us.

Re: Elvis the Puppet-Master --> 1977!
The photo seems to highlight that Elvis physical shape was strange - his arms were very skinny, and his chest was very narrow, with no conditioning. You can see how narrow he looks in the backstage footage at Rapid City, and he seems to struggle to straighten his arms. It's all very unusual. That seems to emphasise his waist size too.
As for the markets Elvis played in 77, there was a mix, as always, but the further he was away from the glare of big city publicity, the better. He definitely played to significant crowds, in the mid to high teens, and was a top draw in the listings. That doesn't, obviously, speak to the quality of the shows seen in Detroit, Chicago, Charlotte etc.

Agree. The 1977 Hawaii vacation photos really highlight that, too.DarrylMac wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 1:29 amThe photo seems to highlight that Elvis physical shape was strange - his arms were very skinny, and his chest was very narrow, with no conditioning. The weirdest thing about this melancholy pic is that a photo enhancer app has clearly been used. I really don’t like that because the images look so unnatural.

Re: Elvis the Puppet-Master --> 1977!
From memory, didn't Elvis say something to the effect that his own arms were like straws, when commenting on Sherrill Nielsen's muscles?
Now you say it, it's obvious. But I didn't realise that when I saw the photo in the opening post. Maybe others noticed.InheritTheWind wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 7:40 pmThe weirdest thing about this melancholy pic is that a photo enhancer app has clearly been used. Yeah, you can tell because everything has that blocky/blurry/pixelated look except his face, which is creepily crisp and clear. Too my eyes that photo enhancement looks so unnatural.mike edwards66 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 1:44 amNow you say it, it's obvious. But I didn't realise that when I saw the photo in the opening post. Re: Elvis the Puppet-Master --> 1977!
Nothing to add or to comment concerning the health of Elvis in 1977 or the quality of his performance, but just concerning the Charlotte concert from 77 :Thats_all_right wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 5:21 pmA worn out suit, in a small auditorium, in a small town, for the nth time, with a frickin mouse puppet on his hand.
- it was the second time that Elvis used this suit in 77 so at this time, it was not already a "worn out" suit. I agree, it will be the case soon.
- I'm from France and I've search on Internet because I didn't know. Charlotte was the 17th town of the USA by the seize of the people in 2014. Most probably, it was not so different in 1977. So it was not a small town really. Of course, it was not New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.
And we all know, at this time "the end is near..."
You've never walked in that man's shoes or seen things through his eyes
Or stood and watched with helpless hands while the heart inside you dies
So help your brother along the road no matter where you start
For the God that made you, made them too, these men with broken hearts

So help your brother along the road no matter where you start

Well, he watched TTWII a lot of times during the 70's, maybe he did in 1977 too...Hillbilly01 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 8:10 amI often wonder what he might have thought looking in the mirror or at old pictures of his former self...
