1970 to the present day UK MAGAZINES

'This is a forum for those interested in the vast amount of worldwide publications that Elvis has featured on through the years right up to the present day. Avoiding specialist publications such as "Elvis Monthly", "Strictly Elvis" etc, we will enable to share a gallery of global magazine covers featuring the King. Country, year or subject matter of the publication does not matter, even if Elvis was featured on the cover of "Russian farming today", let's see it! You may also wish to discuss how you located this publication and the contents within.'

Tony, I just noticed where the original UK mag section got deleted so I thought I'd post the story of how my three Elvis mags for New English Library came about.

Back in the 60s and 70s I was a journalist in London. Rodney Burbeck was the RCA press officer at the time and he often headed Elvis inquiries my way. New English Library contacted Rodney, looking for a writer who liked Elvis. Before I knew it, I had a contract to write and produce an Elvis one-shot magazine.

So in 1973, Elvis Today was published. It cost only 25p! The glossy, 32 page magazine was loaded with color and b&w pictures, plus articles penned by me. There's one dealing with the Destination USA OEPFC trip to Vegas, which I was lucky enough to have been on. On the back cover is one of Rex Martin's classic shots of Elvis on stage, taken just before the rest of the Brits arrived.

The following year, 1974, New English Library published my second Elvis one-shot, Elvis - 21 Years a King. This 30 page mag was the same format as the first but sold for 30p. One of my stories features the 1973 Nottingham Convention and included some fan photos that I had taken.

My final one-shot came in 1975. Elvis Mania sold for 50p, but had 64 pages. It was actually assembled from a book I wrote for NEL titled Elvis Memorabilia, which never made it to the book stores. The mag featured a lot of the material from the book.

**In the mid 60s to mid 70s I was the SE London branch leader for the OEPFC and published a little fanzine called El News. I held monthly dances above a pub in Greenwich. I worked full time for DC Thomson (Jackie Magazine, Diana Magazine, Weekly News, Sunday Post, etc.) and also wrote occasionally for Record Mirror and Top Pops.

I can definitely remember two film shows at The Mitre in Greenwich on the 19th December 1971 and 8th April 1972. Did you go to those by any chance?
