Thank you, The Fool. Definitely fascinating. But poor Elvis to have to go through that... :(

Wow, boy, thank you for the triple-share! I'm not sure how I missed this. These are fascinating and informative articles.

Such a painful story. All three writers cover the same tragedy, and all seem to have attended the funeral on 8-15-1958 (Fri). One thing that stands out is how each piece is so well-written, and empathetic.

We get so many more details about Gladys' illness, hospitalization, sudden passing and funeral. And it happens so fast, in the space of less than one week, starting on Friday, 8-08 in Fort Hood, with Elvis dropping his folks off at the train station to return to Memphis, to the funeral on Friday, 8-15. Elvis must have felt such shock, dislocation, fear and loneliness.

The third article by Eunice Field notes her presence at other Presley events the year before, with many details, including the late December 1957 visit to Graceland by gal pals Hannerl Melcher and Kathy Gabriel. It's also clear those famous photographs of Melcher in a tight skirt, with Presley in black leather astride a Harley, taken by Las Vegas photographer Mike Nagro, are not the only time Hannerl took a motorcycle ride. Nice to have that confirmed.

She later remembered in an interview that Elvis took them to see the new Marlon Brando film, "Sayonara," which she really liked. Brando used a Southern accent for his role in the movie, too.

---

In the end, the loss of his mother was a huge turning point in his life, although no one knew it then.

Thanks again.

Sad to see his privacy invaded to such a degree. Perhaps he didn't have the strength to fight it. It recalls the humiliation he suffered earlier in the year, when he was photographed in his underwear at the induction center.

The picture with Eddie, Elvis looked really bewildered. The Memphis Highway Patrol try to cheer him up with a helicopter ride over Memphis. Wonder if they succeed?Image

Sad to think what Elvis' life could have been had Gladys survived her illness... no one left to look out for him...
