"May Your Future be Blessed" --> Memphis, Dec 17, 1963

Thu Sep 30, 2010 4:48 am

Below is a nice moment at the end of a very tough year for America. President John Kennedy had been killed in Dallas, just three and a half weeks before this charitable holiday ceremony. But Elvis did not forget the many charities he helped out every Christmas season. And this time he was honored for it.

One of Memphis' most famous citizens, Elvis Presley today presented a $55,000 Merry Christmas present to 58 Memphis charities.

He gave $500 to some, more to others.

The mayor's office was overflowing with representatives of the organizations.

Elvis arrived shortly after 2 p.m.

Presley was then given a life-size plaque (six feet tall) from the organizations.

"Good grief," said Presley. "That's beautiful, but I may have to build a room just to keep it in."

Mayor-elect Ingram spoke next.

"I think the proper place to keep it would be in the Elvis Presley Coliseum."

Elvis presented the checks to the organizations, then signed autographs, many on the envelopes which contained the checks.

Presley was sharply dressed in a black continental suit and a black vest, black suede shoes, black tie and stick pin and a fancy gabardine coat with velvet collar.

Presley has been in Memphis about a week. He will be here thru Christmas and his birthday, Jan. 8, when he will be 29. He said he would return to Hollywood in February.

The Goodfellows and the Cynthia Milk Fund of the Press Scimitar were two of the organizations receiving gifts.

And, within a few years, he DID build a room for this award and his many others.

Wasn't the Cynthia Milk Fund also one of the beneficiaries of the July 4, 1956 concert at Russwood Park or am I thinking of something else.

IIRC, there is some footage from this ceremony in Elvis by the Presleys where we see Elvis handing out checks to the various charities. Does anyone else recall this footage?

Thanks all.

I just LOVE seeing his reflection in that plaque.

1964 was going to be an eventful year for Elvis, and the country:

- Last regular studio session for over two years (Nashville, Jan 12)
- Beatles blow away America on Ed Sullivan (New York Feb 9)
- British Invasion takes hold of popular culture ("Beatlemania")
- Gulf of Tonkin "incident" and resolution (Aug 2-7)
- Johnson elected US President (Nov 3)

Don't forget the debut of the The Munsters on September 24th of that year.
