Re: Sinatra Timex Show - March 1960 -> Name The Bass Players!
It kind of jumped out at me when Stan wrote that but I went and asked anyway.
Scotty said he did not hire anyone or know anyone there. He just spoke to them briefly during rehearsal and the show. He added that Elvis did not call him “sir” because of being in the service. He called everyone m’am and sir because his mother taught him that when he was very young and he continued to do so all the years Scotty knew him.
I'm guessing then that the other members must have been arranged through the Colonel, Diskin or their contacts. Its not likely that the Colenel would let Scotty have any of that type of control, least of all that late in the game.
Greybeard, not likely. Its a union thing.

UPDATE -->
Here is a better shot of our unknown acoustic bass player:
Anyone care to take another shot at identifying this musician?
This guy looks so familiar -- could he be a guitar player, filling in on acoustic bass?

He does look familar.
It crossed my mind that might have played guitar too.
I would look first at Nahville then later expand to Hollyood session people.

I'm still searching for this guy from time to time.
My current theory (and I'm really not convinced by this) is maybe Larry Knechtel who was playing professionally with Duane Eddy during this general period ...

Wow -- this is an intriguing possibility! The second image is not unlike the guy we see above.George Smith wrote:I'm still searching for this guy from time to time.

One issue here is I've never read an interview with Larry where he mentions working with Elvis on the Timex show -- one would think that would be a major memory.
More work must be done! Surely this mystery can be solved!!

Sure looks like him,I can only find him working with Elvis on the 'NBC TV Special in June 1968?
A quote from Sinatra with regards to the Timex show that I have just found, and not seen by myself before.
Frank Sinatra : The night before we did the taping Frank recalled "Elvis came into the room where I was appearing. I spotted him ringside, introduced him to the rest of the audience, and we didn't meet formally until the next day when we started rehearsals in the Grand Ballroom at the hotel.

Mar 7, 1968, Western Recorders - "Live A Little, Love A Little" session (bass)

Do you know what band was backing Frank at that time? Maybe Knechtel was in this group?

From a newspaper report Date march 22nd 1960 -"Sammy Davis Jr. band leader loaned to Frank Sinatra for his Fontainebleau date."....so not sure if that would mean just the band leader or the whole band.drjohncarpenter wrote:Larry Knechtel worked with Elvis on these sessions:davide wrote:Sure looks like him,I can only find him working with Elvis on the 'NBC TV Special in June 1968?

AT LAST! I have been able to identify the person featured in the shot of Elvis below (right of frame with glasses) as songwriter and executive producer Sammy Cahn.
Sammy Cahn backstage during the filming of an ABC television special, 1959.

Re: Sinatra Timex Show - March 1960 -> Name The Bass Players
My thoughts are that the bass player is not Larry Knechtel , as mentioned above he played with Duane Eddy in 1960 being a member of the Rebels. Knechtel quit Eddy's touring group in 1963, but he continued to work with Duane in the studio until the late 1960s
The dates don't work out as Duane Eddy was on tour at the time of the recording of the Timex TV Welcome Home Elvis.
Billboard March 14th 1960
"One of the most talked-of attractions on the the current London scene is the triple threat package of Bobby Darin, Clyde McPhatter and Duane Eddy, which opens there next friday (18th). This GAC unit is the first package to be sent to Britain and the jubilant bookers and promoters are reporting "the biggest rush for tickets since Bill Haley's tour just three years ago".
The tour continued into April around Britain,Larry Knechtel, Jimmy Troxel, Duane Eddy, Dave Campbell and Jim Horn.*

Re: Sinatra Timex Show - March 1960 -> Name The Bass Players
I sent an email to Stan Musick, one of the bass players from the Time show.
He was kind of enough to respond, and he did take a look at our pictures.
Unfortunately, Stan couldn't identify the acoustical bass player's identity from our pictures.
Still, it was nice to have one of the actual musicians from this show check in to view our post. Here is Stan's response to my query.
" Sorry to take so long to answer, but I was on vacation. I did check the website and I'm afraid I can't help you. I only met the acoustic bass player briefly on the show and unfortunately I can't remember his name. There was too much going on at the time.
Regards,
Stan"

How cool is it we can still touch base with someone who played with Elvis in Miami back then?
Surely someone else on FECC can help us out here?

Re: Sinatra Timex Show - March 1960 -> Name The Bass Players
I haven't given up the fight.
OK, maybe it's famed Wrecking Crew musician Tommy Tedesco?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Tedesco
Here are some shots of the great guitarist:
Tommy Tedesco, circa 1965
TommyTedesco and drummer Hal Blaine, circa 1965
Is it him?

Thanks, Greybeard!Greybeard wrote:Today I was listening to Elvis Radio as G Klein was talking (quite extensively) with drummer extraordanaire Hal Blaine. During the chat he mentioned the session men known as THE WRECKING CREW and how they used several bassists. he also mentioned his main favorite sessions were always Elvis and Sinatra. Blaine worked with Tommy Sands in the late 50's.
He also told of working with not only Elvis but also Sinatra and others including Tommy Sands. He mention he worked shows at the Fontainbleu with Sands in particular.
This lead me to wonder- could the unidentified bass player from the Timex Show be one of the Crew's Bass players? I checked a couple images that are available on Google images using the list available on wikipedia and there could be at least one or two candidates.
One not listed but mentioned on the Blaine interview was Tommy Tedesco.
Could this be the lead needed to solve this mystery?

The guy in the 1960 shot seems to have a more receded hairline than Tommy Tedesco. Unfortunately I don't think they are the same.

Re: Sinatra Timex Show - March 1960 -> Name The Bass Players
I beleive the mystery bass player is Chubby Jackson who can be seen below with the same Bass (Kay 5 string upright which is signature to him) that he used on the Time X Special . He was more than likely chosen because of his musical background with such artists as Louis Armstrong, Raymond Scott, Jan Savitt, Henry Busse, Charlie Barnet, Oscar Pettiford, Charlie Ventura, Lionel Hampton, Bill Harris, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, Lennie Tristano and others to back Scotty and Elvis on the show.
Chubby Jackson, a jazz bassist, endorsed the Kay bass for Kay Musical Instrument Company from about 1946 until 1969.

Re: Sinatra Timex Show - March 1960 -> Name The Bass Players
He seems like a good possibility, but the hair isn't quite right, and Jackson was 41 in March 1960. Plus, he was the host of a daily kid's show in New York at that time. In order to be on the Sinatra show he would have had to take off the entire week.
Info and another photo here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chubby_Jackson
Methinks our only hope is to uncover official union documentation for the performance.

Also ... according to the quote I posted by Stan Musick, the Fender bass player in Elvis' rhythm quintet for the Sinatra show: the double bass belonged to him.promiseland wrote:... with the same Bass (Kay 5 string upright which is signature to him) that he used on the Timex Special .
First of all, Joe Comfort WAS the bass player with Nelson Riddle's Orchestra . But there was another group that Elvis used and I was part of that smaller group of musicians.
Who was the Presley bass player in Miami? Someone must know.

Intriguing hunt.
"Chubby" looks considerably "chubbier" than the guy in the picture in the shape of face.

Unfortunatley it still remains a mystery. The new FTD Welcome Home Elvis still lists the Acoustic Bass player as unknown.
Great effort though. Was it with this book in mind Doc that the detective work was initiated?

Both were published well before Welcome Home Elvis was undertaken.
Just chalk it up to another super-cool subject brought to light on FECC by the DOC!
