Sinatra Show - March 1960 -> Name The Band!

Sat Aug 23, 2008 1:56 am

In Miami on March 26, 1960, who were the musicians backing Elvis on great live performances of "Fame And Fortune" and "Stuck On You"? You see them briefly on camera before the first number.

Here's my guess:

Scotty Moore - guitar
Bob Moore - acoustic bass
Grady Martin (?) - electric bass
D.J. Fontana - drums
unknown - piano
Jordanaires - backing vocals

Anyone know more?

Cool shot by the way.

Not the answer you are seeking but here is a run down of the show.

Apparently the master tapes was destoyed by mistake in 1975. All we now have are copies of kinescope.

I trust whoever did that was soundly flogged until they cried like a little girl begging for her mother.

Technology must surely be able to restore the kinescopes to watchable quality? A proper DVD release of this would be cool.

Just watched the show - no mention of band members names are mentioned in the credits. Over the credits there is a plug for GI Blues.

Frank Sinatra sings some of the credits including "thank you Colonel Parker"

Could the Piano player be Nelson Riddle?

It's not Musical Director Nelson Riddle, nor is it Producer Jimmy Van Heusen.

Its possible the piano player was Floyd Cramer? as he was on the "stuck on you" recording on the 20th of march 1960.

Here's Nelson with Frank. They look very similar, no?

It's not the great Floyd Cramer, either.

James V. Roy -- can you run this by Scotty? Perhaps you can show him the screen grab? He might recall the electric bass and piano player's names.

It was an unusual set-up -- TWO bassists!.

Let the producers of the Sullivan set have a crack at it, I'm sure they could come up with some good results.

According to That's Alright, Elvis, Scotty's autobiography, the band was augmented by members of the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.

In Sessions III (Chicago: JAT, 2004) the author lists one bass player and two drummers. Using some of his information, here's a revised musician's list:

Scotty Moore - guitar
Bob Moore (?) - acoustic bass
Joe Comfort (?) - electric bass
D.J. Fontana - drums
Bill Miller (?) - piano
Jordanaires - backing vocals

Could this be it? Joe Comfort is a heck of a good name for a bass player.

Decided to go to the source.

Have emailed Riddle's family, who run his website, with both photos.

Perhaps they can shed some light.

Will keep you posted.

Good idea. That would have been something to tell the Grandkids... I've worked with Sinatra and Elvis!

Here's a picture of the great Bill Miller circa 1957.

Not really, you can't do much to kinescope at all.

They can make it a little better but they have said alot can't be done about it.

I think Doc would have spotted if the band members were mentioned.

No A-Teamers on that gig. Bob only performed live with them once, in Hawaii. Besides Scotty and DJ it would've been members of Frank's (Nelson's) people or the Miami Union.

Bill Miller would almost certainly have been accompanying Sinatra during this period.
