Nice read!
Just think, Monique, you could 'resurrect' all the old posts you never saw before.

Might take a while...................................

The doc linked to this old post in a more recent post. So I felt free to read and enjoy it...and even let him know I did. Sorry if it bothers you.

Hey Monique,

i don't think this was meant as an unfriendly thing.

On this board ::rocks it is sometimes hard for ppl whose native tongue is not English to distinguish certain remarks.
I know i had to deal with that a couple of times; my native language is Dutch and sometimes a direct translation from English to Dutch is not that friendly for the reader. So just try to sit back and relax and try to look at the message the poster is trying to convey.... there are lot of archived posts on this MB, covering a lot of subjects.... and to try to read them all.... might indeed take a while.
You did good by reading and posting. You have nothing to apologize for.

PEP, could you (or anyone else who owns a copy) post a picture.
It would be great to see what Elvis wrote in those yearbooks.

This is my copy of the yearbook.

Thanks for sharing. Can anyone tell me what Elvis wrote? To me it looks like "Best luck to a sweet guy Elvis"

Is that correct?

The swell guy who owned this yearbook was James M. Yarbrough
It contains almost all signatures incl. George Klein and Ed Leek.

I also don't believe that Elvis is shown on two classroom pictures, I think he is only on one.
I also think that Red West is pictured a few times in the book.
Can anyone confirm?

Great Job Doc!

I really enjoyed reading all the comments from his classmates.

I also appreciate your hard work and time you put into this.

Thanks, Mitch!

The remembrances pertaining to our hero are quite insightful, from Elvis' early acting ambitions to the coaching he received prior to heading to New York for the second Ed Sullivan appearance.

I recently found nice scans of the 1953 Humes Herald yearbook, including ALL the pages that pertain to its most famous graduate.

They are below, please enjoy them!

Image

Humes High Class of 1953
This was something separate from the yearbook, but am including it here, just for fun!

Image

Image

Elvis Presley's senior page entry, each autographed for a classmate's copy of the annual
"Best of luck to a swell guy. Elvis"
"Best of everything to a very sweet, cute girl. Elvis"

Image

Part of the "Last Will"
"Section 83. Donald Williams, Raymond McGraig and Elvis Presley leave hoping there will be some one to take their places as 'teachers' pets'??????"

Image

Part of the "Class Prophesy"
"We are reminded at this time not to forget to invite you all out to the "Silver Horse" on Onion Avenue to hear the singing hillbillies of the road. Elvis Presley, Albert Teague, Doris Wilburn and Mary Ann Propst are doing a bit of picking and singing out that a-way."

Image

History Class pages
Miss Scrivener's class was Elvis' homeroom, but he appears to have missed the photo date, which looks to have been two separate occasions between December 1952 and February 1953. She also produced the talent show that spring and encouraged Elvis to perform.

Image

Image

English class page
Elvis appears in the first photo. His friend Ed Leek is also seen, in the front row. Look for George Klein in the second photo.

Image

Image

Biology class page
Elvis again appears in the first photo. His friend from Lauderdale Courts, Evan "Buzzy" Forbes is also seen. Both would be drafted out of Memphis in March 1958, and you can see him there in photos of Elvis that day. Future friend Bobby "Red" West is in the "Field Trip" photo.

Happy 65th Anniversary, Class of 1953!
