Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
I'm siding with the Doc.drjohncarpenter wrote:Of course, this is possible. The thing is, would Elvis have such a deep tan in April? And why would producer Felton Jarvis be there? It makes more sense that Jarvis is with him in July, as he was at RCA Hollywood during the rehearsals for Presley's impending Vegas show. Had Elvis decided to see Tom, it would be a very easy jaunt to get to the Forum from RCA Hollywood, not even a half-hour drive.elvisalisellers wrote:Tom Jones played a near month-long engagement at the International Hotel during April/May 1970, so it's not beyond the realms [in fact more likely] that the photographs actually pertain to Elvis attending Jones' Las Vegas show, possibly on opening night - April 20, 1970.

Besides, the background and signage in the black and white photo looks nothing like the backstage shots we have from the International in that era.
If anyone has any more evidence, it would be great to see it. Thanks for the kudos, everyone.
A lot of work and a lot of great information put together. Thanks Doc!

Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
First photo with female looks like edited with photoshop IMHO look at the elvis skin and colour and that girls skin and colour very different female fan photo clear as todays photos with lot of skin details with proper pixels.drjohncarpenter wrote:Every now and then a dedicated Presley fan finds information that indicates a common dating of some candids is incorrect.
All of these images below are supposed to be from a Tom Jones show "at Caesar's Palace" in Las Vegas "in October 1970."
With female fan.
With Richard Davis, Felton Jarvis
With Charlie Hodge, Richard Davis, Felton Jarvis
Well, research strongly implies Tom Jones was not at Caesar's Palace in September OR October 1970. And in fact, his first appearance there was in 1971.
Caesar's Palace Headliners, September-November 1970*
Frank Sinatra = 9-03 to 9-21-1970 (cancelled after 9-05, replaced by Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 on 9-10)
Tony Bennett = 10-01 to 10-14-1970 (delayed 2 days by laryngitis, comedian Woody Woodbury filled in)
Petula Clark = 10-15 to 10-28-1970
Harry Belafonte = 10-29-1970 to 11-18-1970
*See scans in next post.
If we are certain it is a Tom Jones show Elvis is at in those photos, it seems Jones DID play the Inglewood Forum on Saturday, July 25, 1970, with support from the Count Basie Orchestra, Gladys Knight & the Pips and comedian Norm Crosby.
Tom Jones Tour Itinerary, May 1970
Ad for July 25, 1970 Forum show
This date would fit with Presley's appearance at this time, and he was definitely in Los Angeles, and Richard Davis and Felton Jarvis were around him at this time. And we see both Davis and Jarvis in MGM's documentary, filmed in July-August. Note that Elvis was working at RCA Hollywood, rehearing for his impending Las Vegas engagement -- we even have an excellent RCA Hollywood rehearsal recording from Friday, July 24, in both unofficial and official form. And some of the imagery in the background of the black and white photo looks like something from the Forum.
So, if we're talking Tom Jones, then the photos are from Elvis and his crew at the Inglewood Forum, catching Jones in concert on a hot Saturday evening in the summer of 1970 - July 25th to be exact.
Thank you.
photo looks like amateurish photoshop IMHO...

Do you have something a little bigger than 227 x 600 pixels for all three images? The background may be able to support whether we're seeing the lobby of the Forum or not. But it's hard to make out.Rock Legend wrote:Here's a few more.

Great work. When I get back in town I'll revise the link.
Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
Actually after looking again at the photo I agree that its been photoshopped. I see the colour issues and differences in the quality. Edges also look cut off on the shirt, the edges of Elvis's face look like theyve been modified and dont quite line up. Shadows are not right either and the highlights on the woman look faked. Not saying that the woman has been photoshopped into the picture but the picture has been modified.Erhan wrote: First photo with female looks like edited with photoshop IMHO look at the elvis skin and colour and that girls skin and colour very different female fan photo clear as todays photos with lot of skin details with proper pixels.

Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
Whatever the status of the photo with the woman, all of the images of Elvis appear to be from this likely visit to the Fabulous Forum in the summer of 1970. It's sad to note that everyone we see in the candids, Elvis, Charlie, Richard and Felton, are no longer with us to potentially verify this event.

Thank you.
But, maybe Elvis wasn't attending a Tom Jones concert. I think we can agree that all three photos which you posted are from the same time/day. The above photo (...03.JPG), which you posted is interesting as it shows a partial advertisement for the appearance of Norm Crosby at Nero's Nook which was located within Caesars Palace.
Norm Crosby opened at Nero's Nook on September 12, 1970
Billboard Magazine: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=kCkEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA30&lpg=PA30&dq=norm+crosby+show+dates+nero's+nook+caesars+palace+1970&source=bl&ots=24YF6qT3UX&sig=aJHs3W-WtpepdtLMVitO7yBrJbU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=-_6fUL7pGMrV0QXt8YDoDQ&ved=0CD0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=norm%20crosby%20show%20dates%20nero's%20nook%20caesars%20palace%201970&f=falseNorm Crosby opened in Nero's Nook of Caesars Palace. Rounding out the bill with Crosby are the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Burgundy St. Singers and Sisters Love. Source: Billboard Magazine, Vol 82, No. 37, Page 30
Therefore, I thnk that the photos are most likely from Caesars Palace.
The first photo you posted shows Elvis with a female. A suggestion has been put forward on another topic that the female could be Barbara Leigh. Elvis met Barbara Leigh on August 29, 1970.
Therefore it is most possible that the photos are from August/September, 1970.29 Saturday
Elvis' visitors include MGM Head Jim Aubrey and his date, Barbara Leigh

Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
I blew up the image, it probably is a reference to Nero's Nook, the upscale lounge at Caesar's Palace. This is the background confirmation I was seeking.jon_burrows wrote:PS. what looks like 'nero'S NOOK' appears just above 'noRM croSBY' in photo ...03.JPG.
Sadly, this means we must start again, and scratch Tom Jones from the list of shows he might have seen. Tom was not at Caesar's Palace at this time.
However, further research indicates your conclusion about Norm Crosby on September 12, 1970 is incorrect. That is the date of the Billboard issue, not the start of his lounge engagement. And Elvis wasn't going to Nero's Nook, either. Stand by.
Please also note that the woman in the first posted photo is definitely NOT Barbara Leigh.

Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
The one thing that bugged me a little from the pictures is why would there be a Roman style column in the L.A. Forum?

Re: Elvis Saw Tom at the Forum --> It's No Mystery Now!
Yep, it's not something you would expect to see.Mister Mike wrote:The one thing that bugged me a little from the pictures is why would there be a Roman style column in the L.A. Forum?
Also, the attire alone of Richard Davis, should have been enough for one to at least question the validity of Elvis attending Jones' show at the Forum.
