Essential Imports or Bootlegs?

Dr. Carpenter,

I'm new here, and although I've been a collector for a long time, the majority of my collection is Sony (RCA) and FTD stuff. I tend to have the mindset that a lot of the bootleg market is repackaged or remixed FTD or Sony stuff. I've been reading a lot of your past posts and I really appreciate your expertise. I'm just wondering if you have some bootlegs or imports you'd consider essential to your collection that I should look at adding into mine.

Thanks for your time!
Keith

Interesting question. These days, if you own everything from Follow That Dream you'd like to have, that kind of covers the "import" market. They've gone beyond 200 titles since launching in the summer of 1999, and nearly every aspect of Presley's musical life is represented.

Is there a specific area of Elvis' life and music you focus on? Exactly how much do you have from RCA and FTD? Is there something you've read about that you have yet to find?

Otherwise, these are pages you might like to review:

Thanks for the response and links! I love the 60s studio sessions and the 70s live stuff most. Those are my two main areas of focus. I own all of the FTD classic albums series and as many of the live albums as I can find for reasonable prices. I haven't collected many of the books. As for RCA I own the 60 CD set from a few years back and many of the official box sets. I really appreciate your time!

If you have not tracked down the FTD "classic sessions" releases, they are akin to "dream bootlegs."

Fans thirty years ago would have jumped through fire pits to own them. All mastered from the original sources -- not reconstituted from earlier discs, as certain grey market labels operate.

Usually it's three discs, with terrific booklets holding information and related media, as part of the package.

Sound is stupendous.

Yes, a whole lot of music, but a session fan's dream. Also, Elvis was still on his game for the soundtracks seen above.

Not sure how hard any of these will be to locate. Probably the older ones? But I'm sure they're all still out there.

What exactly from the 1970s live do you feel you do not possess?

The best performances are from 1970, and RCA released most all of them.

This is extremely helpful. Thank you! My favorite years of Elvis are probably 73 and 74 (Aloha was the first thing I ever watched) and I just added the Elvis on Tour Set to my collection as well. Thanks for making my evening sir!
