NEWARK -- The soundtrack of the Garden State will be on full display this fall -- the Grammy Museum is coming to Newark's Prudential Center.

The Grammy Museum at L.A. Live and the Prudential Center announced the partnership on Tuesday, flanked by young Jersey performers and iconic artists like soul singer, Emily "Cissy" Houston, mother of the late Whitney Houston.

"It's about time it's coming to Newark," Houston told reporters. "Where I was born and bred."

She said "a lot of people were very wonderful in Newark and they didn't even know it. I hope we'll all come together and really respect one another and love one another."

The 8,200 square-foot museum will open this fall and feature educational programming, interactive exhibits that allow patrons to play instruments and finish songs, and a Jersey-centric display celebrating the state's artists.

"We're more than happy to be in a city that for far too long has really been in the shadows of Manhattan when it comes to talent. And guess what? There's a lot of it here," said Bob Santelli, executive director of Grammy Museum at L.A. Live.

Three other Grammy Museums exist in the U.S. in Los Angeles, Mississippi and Nashville.

Scott O'Neil, CEO of the Devils, Prudential Center and Philadelphia 76ers, said the privately-funded exhibit will be on the ground level, steps from Mulberry Commons, a new 22-acre project that includes a public park and commercial space.

"It'll be like the front door step of Mulberry Commons," O'Neil said.

"It adds more credibility to the revitalization efforts in Newark," added Colin McConnell, senior vice president and chief brand officer at Prudential. "At some point you can't ignore it."

The museum will include:
•A Ray Charles exhibit
•A New Jersey Grammy Legends exhibit featuring artists like Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston
•A history of the Grammy awards
•Interactive drumming lessons
•A studio experience allowing guest to mix/remix a track

"This project adds another layer of richness to the city that will really last a lifetime," said Newark's Deputy Mayor Baye Adofo-Wilson.

Grammy Museum Experience honors Newark’s rich musical heritage

The first East Coast outpost of LA’s Grammy Museum offers virtual drum lessons with Max Weinberg and celebrates homegrown artists like Whitney, Bruce and Frank.

When most people think about America’s great musical cities, Newark likely isn’t on the list — but that’s about to change now that the Grammy Museum Experience has opened at the Prudential Center.

Just eight months after announcing that the first East Coast outpost of Los Angeles’ Grammy Museum would open in Newark: https://www.metro.us/new-york/grammy-museum-gets-first-east-coast-home-at-prudential-center-in-newark-nj/zsJqbg---HJtcWfnqRxRlY , the interactive, multimedia Experience held its ribbon-cutting today and officially opens to the public Friday.

“Newark gets overshadowed by Philly and New York, but it has an incredible musical legacy,” said Bob Santelli, founding executive director of the Grammy Museum.

Thursday’s festivities kicked off with a rousing performance by the New Hope Baptist Church Choir, which was joined for its last song by Cissy Houston, the Grammy-winning Newark native and mother of Whitney Houston.

The performance was fitting as the younger Houston, who died in 2012, is not only one of the best-selling artists of all-time, she’s also featured alongside Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and many others in an exhibit honoring the Garden State’s homegrown musicians.

“There are so many musical greats in this city, you have to wonder what’s in the water,” joked Margaret El, special assistant for the arts for Newark Public Schools.

The Grammy Museum Experience also offers interactive drum lessons with Newark native Max Weinberg of Springsteen’s E Street Band, an in-the-studio session with Wyclef Jean and other immersive exhibits.

“This opening provides an incredible opportunity to leverage the power of music, to educate and inspire the next generation of performers here and beyond,” said David Blitzer, who, along with Josh Harris, co-owns the Prudential Center and recently co-founded Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.

The Grammy Museum Experience is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until 8:30 p.m. if there is an event at the Prudential Center. Tickets cost $7-$10 via Ticketmaster. Visit GrammyMuseumExp.org for more info.
