I'm looking forward to this release. It's always fascinating when lost or unheard material surfaces.

Yeah. Listened to the complete song on monday. Not a great song, but very good. Why they kept this in the can remains a mystery to me. Looking forward to it too.

Re: Johnny Cash "Out Among The Stars"Preview
I guess that David allan Coe did have a hit on this one at the same time:
This was the years that David Allan coe was high on the hitlists and a big seller.
Johnny Cash did have no big sellers/hits at the time.
Johnny got fired from Columbia records in 1986.
Hard times for many great country artists these years.

Re: Johnny Cash "Out Among The Stars"Preview
I think this album was shelved in the wake of Johnny's deteriorating relationship with Columbia. If I remember correctly, this may have been around the same time that the "Highwayman" project with Johnny, Waylon, Willie, and Kris emerged, so Columbia promoted a sure moneymaker for them at the expense of Johnny's album. I think the only thing released by Cash on Columbia after that was the infamous "Chicken In Black" single.
The newly discovered album finds Cash in good voice but perhaps a little dated in the context of country music in 1984. At that time, country music was a little more group/band oriented with distinct pop influences. The new traditionalist movement was just starting with Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, and Dwight Yoakam. It would really start to swing back to traditional in 1986-87 with Randy Travis.
It is a shame that Cash didn't pitch this album to Mercury. Then again, Mercury didn't do a very good job of promoting Cash, either.
So it is great that this album emerges 30 years later and can be heard and appreciated by Johnny Cash fans around the world.

Saw it too late. But pre-ordered the album. Can't wait to listen to it.

Re: Johnny Cash "Out Among The Stars"Preview
While this CD will be most welcome, all signs suggest that this is going to be a typical early 80s album from Johnny Cash. In other words, whereas this would have passed unnoticed thirty years ago, its now getting quite a fanfare. And there's nothing wrong with that, but what I've heard so far is unremarkable (although pleasant enough), and sounds very similar to the material on The Baron and The Adventures of Johnny Cash. They are solid enough albums, and I enjoy them when I give them a spin. While the early 80s material is generally solid and enjoyable, Cash was often seemingly just churning out material by this time. There are exceptions (Rainbow, Johnny 99, Heroes), but this is likely to be "pleasant" rather than earth-shattering, and unlikely to add any new dimension to the Cash legacy in the way the Personal File recordings did, for example.

That's actually exactly what I expect. A nice, pleasant 80's album. To be honest I don't quite understand all the big fuss around it either but I'm really looking forward to listen to it.poormadpeter wrote:While this CD will be most welcome, all signs suggest that this is going to be a typical early 80s album from Johnny Cash. That said I didn't even manage to listen to the whole Complete Columbia box set yet.
