Amazon charged me £147.59, but let's not quibble over 11p :D
Damn site cheaper than MyPlay anyway!

A bargain :)

It is good to see that amazon (and the Fanzine Store) have the best price around. Not bad for a 63-CD set, less than £2.50 a CD.

Well the running time of some discs will no doubt be rather short, but as you say, a bargain at that price.

We still don't know this. The set purports to be the complete masters, not just the complete albums. The non-album sides will fill up more than the 2CD compilation of singles etc that act as a kind of appendix, so my guess is that most albums will have bonus tracks as well, but we shall have to wait for the tracklisting for confirmation.

The albums will not contain any bonus tracks. The 2-CD set will include many of the non-album tracks, guest appearances etc.

Just waiting on my review copy :)

I thought the albums would have the mono and stereo mixes and some alternate takes.
If not, the set could have been 20 discs less.

The whole point of the set is to present all the Columbia albums in their original sleeves and with their original contents. Hence the title, The Complete Columbia Album Collection. Regarding mono/stereo, the first nineteen albums are being made available in mono for the first time on CD.

How is this set being anticipated in the Johnny Cash community? Are fans happy with the release as it is, or would something along the lines of the Elvis Complete Masters have been preferable?
Personally I like the idea of the albums complete with original artwork for this set, but wouldn't have wanted the Elvis Complete Masters to have gone that route.

In general most Cash fans I know are looking forward to this release. Obviously there is the odd moan about why this or that wasn't included but that is bound to happen. Personally I am looking forward to the set and like the idea of each album being presented in a replica sleeve with just the original tracks. That is how I remember them when I bought the vinyl copies. The Bear Family sets are great but there is something nice about playing the albums as originally released without bonus tracks etc.

Out of interest I have attached the press release I put together for the fanzine.

Thanks for that Peter. You're never going to please everyone whatever is released but this looks like coming as close as possible. :)

Gotta admit, I didn't like the dry vocal on "The Big Battle" on the Bear box, I preferred the Columbia version (for one example).

A few weeks back I bought a (pretty worn) copy of the "I Would Like To See You Again" / "Lately" single and was surprised what a great, dynamic, punchy sound this thirty-five year old 45rpm had! :o

That album (I Would Like To See You Again), like so many from the last decade of the tenure at Columbia is really very good. Those last ten years never produced music that was going to change the world, but it is still highly enjoyable in the main. I don't care much for The Last Gunfighter Ballad LP, but I do very much like Johnny 99, Rockabilly Blues, The Baron, Gone Girl, Adventures of Johnny Cash, Heroes and Rainbow. They are uneven albums, and often suffer from an almost saccharine sentimental track or two, but even so I like them very much. Gone Girl has two must have tracks - the cover of No Expectations and the beautiful Song for the Life. The cover of The Gambler isn't bad either, and that, along with tracks such as The Baron and Highway Patrolman, showed that Cash might have been effectively treading water in his career at this point but never lost his ability to tell a good story. Here Comes That Rainbow Again on Rainbow shows this to great effect. It might be a slight tale, and highly sentimental, but there is no doubt that Cash believes every word, and his sincerity shines through.

Thanks a lot for the info, Peter. Gotta admit among the ones you listed are some albums I never heard before (unlike Elvis I just can't listen to every single Johnny Cash song). Mostly simply because I was unable to locate a copy of them. I LOVE his cover of "No Expectations", even though it reminds me of an unpleasant time in my life. I remember flying back from Memphis in 2002, having bought the "I Would Like To See You Again" album and listened to it for the first time on my portable CD player. When "Hurt So Bad" came up, I immediately fell in love with it and it still remains one of my favorite Cash tracks ever. A few years back my cousin and me taped our own (informal) recording of "Abner Brown". The reason why I bought this album was the song "That's The Way It Is". :D
Despite the bad mastering (allegedIy mastered by Steve Hoffman!) I really love this record. Can't wait to hear the new remaster.
Among other tracks I know and really dig is, for example, "Joshua Gone Barbados". And yes, I also love his cover of "Highway Patrolman".

Thanks a lot, Claus and Peter - really looking forward to this baby! :D

I am in two minds about the track listing. It seems the original information from a few months ago that albums would be in mono and stereo was incorrect, and it appears that none of the albums have bonus tracks either. In some cases this makes sense, but Folsom Prison and San Quentin were only made better by the added tracks on the late 90s editions, and I would argue that Silver was nicely complemented by the two extra duets on the CD issue - only one of which appears to be here on disc 63. There is probably another 2 CDs worth of Columbia oddities and singles not present here, and it's a shame that they didn't go the extra mile to complete the collection. On the other hand, it's wonderful to see such fine yet forgotten albums as Rainbow and Strawberry Cake finally being made available - and one can only assume that another edition of the Bootleg series will act as a mopping up exercise of material not collected here.

I still think the monos are included which was also stated in the press release.but I just don't think they are mentioned.

Exactly...

"First 19 Albums (1958-1967) released for first time in mono on CD by Columbia/Legacy in the U.S."

I'm glad so I don't have to feel guilty for possessing the Bear boxes...

Peter, you're right, somehow they should have released everything they have in the Columbia vaults (I mean, every master, every duet etc. and live-concerts in complete form) - but this will probably happen to celebrate Cash's 100th birthday (or 25th anniversary of his death) or so...

I think when you copy all the albums and put them on CD-R's you'll most likely only have 40 CD's maximum, but hey, I like the original sleeves.
One bad thing is you have to change the CD's every 25 minutes...

So much music I haven't heard yet... didn't even know he recorded "Life Has It's Little Ups And Downs", a. o.

Sony didn't do this for the Elvis set, either. In fact, The Elvis set is probably less complete than this set.

And a few bucks more expensive...

Absolutely. But this set doesn't come with a hard-cover book.

It still baffles me that a down-sized version of the Elvis set hasn't been released and is widely available. If Sony can release a 63-disc Johnny Cash box, they can also release a 30-disc Elvis box.

Despite my criticisms about there being certain material missing from the set, I have to say I am looking forward to this. I sincerely hope that the CD debut of the vast majority of his 70s and 80s albums will lead to a re-evaluation of them, because I do genuinely feel they are unfairly maligned on the whole (although albums such as Johnny Cash and his Woman deserves all the criticism it gets!)

Edit: Obviously it is worth saying that the above track listing might not be totally accurate - certainly the track listings that appeared for the recent 20 disc set of Elvis albums were not accurate in places - and I notice the Gospel Road albums lists "Help" instead of "Help Me" throughout. From what I remember of that double album, the term "help me" was what I was pleading by the time I got to the end!!!

Why quit milking the cow as long as it gets?
If they'd to, this thing would probably still cost at least about 300 - 400 Euros...

Even though the tracklisting might not be totally accurate, I don't expect any surprises at all. I hate to say it but I can't stand June Carter's "singing", that's why I almost NEVER listen to the duets, maybe except for "Jackson" or "If I Were A Carpenter".
I am really looking forward to hear all of the 70's albums, I really like the ones I know ("Silver", "Ragged Old Flag", "I Would Like To See You Again" and the ones included on the Bear box).

Damn it!

I don't like it, but I guess things happen that way.
