Re: BON JOVI

If a Bon Jovi thread in a "Classic Artists" section does not signal that this section should probably be discontinued...I don't know what will.

I have often said the same thing with regards to other "artists" discussed in this section.

I'm as big of a Bon Jovi fan as they come. I'm the DOC of the Bon Jovi world. Bon Jovi got me into Elvis as one of their big influences. Jon Bon Jovi is the Elvis of my generation and I noticed a lot of similarities within both of their careers..... Both started as heartthrobs, did movies, had comebacks, large live acts, etc. And My Bon Jovi resume is endless.

Bon Jovi and Jon solo covered many Elvis songs and even copied one of his album covers too

Bty, it's 28 years Doc. And who is your cousin Ian and what year?

As far as live DVDs, what years and does quality matter? Like Elvis, Bon Jovi's best music was early on in their career. For them it was in the late 80s to mid 90s. Even though their greatest success was in the 80s, they were on top of their game in the 90s. Musically and vocally!

Start with YouTube. Someone posted a ton of live DVDs. Do a search, you'll find it. Each DVD are in it's entirety too. None of that part 1 of 5.

Jeez, I saw Bon Jovi live back in New York, 1984, I believe ...

I think they were opening for RATT or someone of that nature. I was young and I liked hard rock, glam rock, whatever label you wanna give it now. I guess now, it's "Hair Bands", but it was loud and all about tough guitars, screeching vocals and powerful drums.

I liked the early Bon Jovi stuff, (I had great fun with the chicks listening to them), but boy did they sell it after a while. Some of their later music just blows, it all sounds the same.

My younger sister adores them, but I just laugh it off, "yeh, yeh, they're great ..."

I saw them in 1993, 1995 and 2010.
Terrific shows all of them.

Re: BON JOVI

I have seen them 4 times in total and all were great shows. Bands that have been around as long as they have, know how to put on a good show.

When I saw them in '95 (within days of the Wembley gig that they released on dvd) they were fantastic. When they played "Hey God" they absolutely rocked the place. What a song!

I've seen Bon Jovi live on two occasions -- goods shows both of them and they're still a terrific unit, but Jon's singing has become frequently abysmal as a live performer over the past ten or twelve years. Both he and Bono have the same issues -- they try to phrase and vocalise in ways that are contradictory to what comes natural through being less self-conscious.

I wouldn't care to see them live again, but there's still good music in the group, whilst Slippery When Wet and New Jersey have stood the test of time and remain two of the best rock albums of their era. Keep the Faith had its moments, too.

I had my internet cut off last thursday, so I'm under time constraints etc., but I'll try to find out from her in the next little bit and let you know the details. It was in the 80's.Cindy has always been a self confident and independent person, and if I'm not mistaken she broke up with him.

I couldn't agree more and this has been my biggest complaint on all their post 2K albums / concerts.

They both sing in high ranges which has probably killed and continues to kill their vocals year after year. My only guess is that technology has taken over and I think these guys think they are fooling everyone. Everything is now overproduced to hide the vocal change.

I've always said, Bon Jovi's biggest success post 2k was "It's My Life" because it allowed them a comeback. And their biggest downfall post 2k was "it's My Life" because it proves that an overproduced flat vocal could still produce a major hit. Every album since contained an It's My Life sequel.

Bottom line, songs like that are nice to hear once in a while but they need songs in that high register because that's what gives them their passion and emotion.

Re: BON JOVI

Jon had his up and downs vocally.
His worst ever happened during the Have A Nice Day tour. He was struggling to reach any notes.
On the other hand, on the 2010 tour when I saw him perform for 3 hours, he was in great voice.

Like I said, it's just a guess but it's evident to me when I compare studio versions to live versions. I've heard the term auto-tune but I'm not really sure if that's what Jon and Bono use.

In 2010 Jon was in great voice as someone said above and continues to have a very good voice today. It's not that he can't sing but he struggles with the high notes and has a different tone to his overall voice. Even when he speaks, I can hear it.

First compare a song performed live between '95 and '10:

Here is a song from These Days '95 '96 that Jon was once able to sing in one breath.
Listen to how it's supposed to be sung... 2:25 and on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5A1RzUhnc8

In the 2010 version he does do a good job but you will hear the difference 2:07 and on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67ySaGogCK0

Second compare a live version vs. a studio version:
Here, I'm not saying Jon can't sing it, I'm just saying there is a noticeable difference. Just listen to the first verse, when he hits the high notes.

Studio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jatrqN3Hy6Q
.42 and on

Live:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e0YumLK ... re=related
1.04

Both are good but there definitely is difference. Auto-Tune? Maybe

Re: BON JOVI

Interesting stuff going on here.

I think anybody familiar with the material and the "Bon Jovi" band, have noticed major changes in Jon's voice over the years.

Very nasaly, very strained kind of approach, but they still sell out concerts everywhere and their studio efforts continue to reach the top of the charts, reach GOLD status in the U.S. with almost every release.

My good friend of almost 30 years, just saw Jon Bon Jovi perform last week, solo, down at the Hard Rock Cafe in South Florida.

He said the place was jammed, but he was soooooo disappointed with what he remembered Bon Jovi for. And the one thing that stood out: his voice, or lack of, I should say.

Re: BON JOVI

Sun Jul 29, 2012 4:40 pm

In reference to the above comment. I totally agree. I just watched the Hard Rock concert on YouTube and I agree with your friend..... Jon can still sing but he lost that raw power. Imo, that's why the albums have suffered. He/ they are writing songs around Jons voice in different keys which is causing those songs to lack passion.

In Jons defense, he's now in his 50s and it's like everything else in life. You abuse the sh*t out of something it will definitely catch up with you later in life. We are hearing the effects of a voice that was getting steroid shots in his vocals so he could sing every night.

Good news is, his voice isn't horrible like others in his camp and technology allows him to prevail. They do put on one hell of a live show. His struggles are less noticeable in a stadium vs. an intimate club show or watching it on YouTube.

As a diehard fan, it's tough looking back to what it once was. But hey, that's life. I'm looking forward to another box set to celebrate 30 years and hopefully we'll get some 80s / 90s recordings like we did on the last!
