MY little friend

Tue Nov 15, 2011 2:17 am

Never thought I could share this! I saw it live as it happened. For real! It was televised and almost nobody knew who they were.

You must have been a kid... that was over 42 years ago!

Michael himself was just 10 years old -- turning 11 a week later -- and already he was a master of singing, dancing and performance.

"It's Your Thing," the fantastic Isley Brothers song, was a good selection -- a funk and feminist anthem that had hit Billboard U.S. Pop #2 and R&B #1 earlier that year for them. The Jackson 5 had cut a version that month, but it stayed in the vaults until Soulsation! -- a 1995 box set.
The new Jackson 5 single, "I Want You Back," would hit #1 on Billboard U.S. Pop and R&B charts the following January.

The dating on that YouTube video is very incorrect (see below). This version might be better quality:

Jackson 5, "It's Your Thing" (Saturday, August 23, 1969, Felt Forum, New York)
The 2nd Annual Miss Black America pageant, the first-ever telecast of the event.
Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY.
Other Motown acts like the Impressions and Stevie Wonder also performed.
Gloria O. Smith won the title of "Miss Black America" that evening.

Of course I was a little kid. And I was overwhelmed. As a lonely only child, you can imagine the impact. We would move and he would always be "there."

Not anymore.

P.S. Yeah. I noticed they said 68. Which is nearly impossible even if you don't know. They don't have a Doc. But you think they would have read the books.

Their mom bought those outfits at a Pick 'n' Save.

I have most of Soulsation on my IPod. I will have to
probably reload all those bigger sets to a new hard disc. Doggone.

The big question is, who took you to the Felt Forum in the summer of 1969?

Around that time, they took me to see Jerry Lewis do comedy. At a supperclub. And an old style Italian crooner. Boring. Lewis looked right at me and said to the audience "Gotta watch what I say. Early show. The KINDER!"

I mean come on. I also saw the Mets win the world series live but so did everyone alive and sentient in America.

Very few people saw the J5 on this live! Some mistake it for The Hollywood Palace.

P.S. Saw him in the flesh twice in 88.

I have never attended a beauty pageant. I liked the idea of this one cause the "regular" one was so . . . well ridiculous. Watched it live in my bedroom. Had my own TV from age five. And it was always on.

P.S. I saw the astronauts walk on the moon live, but I wasn't ON the moon! I still saw it live.

Well, he WAS a "different" sorta Elvis. From this the world got like five million ETA's.

Anyway. Can you imagine watching a BEAUTY PAGEANT and something like that comes on? Plus, before high school even, I went to 17 different schools. I wasn't even close to that figure when this appeared. This amazing little guy turned out to be portable. I would never see any friends I ever made again as we went on our way, but this kid was always "there."

I thought, when I was little, that he was happy.

About the Aloha broadcast, how close was it in time to the Oscars telecast of that year?

It's important to me for a personal reason.

I was in my uncle's house for the Oscars. And I think I saw Aloha there. My uncle Mickey had just died. His house.

But I may not be remembering where I was for Aloha correctly. Do you have the dates? Much appreciated.
