No wonder Jackson was one of Presley's favourite singers. Here she is singing Come Sunday as part of Duke Ellington's set at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958. Their studio collaboration from the same year of the complete Black Brown and beige suite (of which Come Sunday is a part) is one of my favourite albums of all time.
And this is even more stunning: an alternate studio version of the same song a capella.
Who can failed to be moved by this?

Black, Brown and Beige was one of Edwark K.'s masterworks, and nowhere in the entire suite was Mahalia Jackson more suited than on Come Sunday. She was brilliant across the entire album, of course -- and Come Sunday translated wonderfully live at Newport.
