Tom Jones will never be taken seriously as an artist. He is somewhere between cheesy and over blown easy listening. Songs like "You can leave your hat on", "Sex bomb" and "The Young new Mexican puppeteer", along with the enforced hip movements and the panty throwing, will always keep him in the cheesy section for me.
He has tried desperately though, thru the years, to appear 'hip' and 'cool' by recording with The Cardigans, The stereophonics etc, it doesn't work for me I'm afraid.

Thanks Tony: Actually I'm not a fan of those songs either ! Tom recorded lots of other songs that were better and recently i uploaded a few on you tube as they weren't available. Did you actually play "I'll Share My World" ?

Do you think he'll have nightmares when you're saying he won't be taken seriously as an artist ? The man sold more than 100 million records, is having a musical career most can only dream of. Over the years many 'serious' artists have worked with him. Is still strutting his stuff on stage, without being a parody of himself, is treating the old hits like he's never sung them before (now, I know lots of artists who don't or didn't......) . Has received many positive reviews after his latest album 'Praise And Blame'. Attracts concert goers all around the world, even at the age of 71. And I could go on and on. So, what's the value of being a 'serious' artist ? For a bit of entertainment I'd rather go to his concerts than for instance an artist who is taken too serious, Bob Dylan.

Thanks Shakin' I didn't understand Tony's comment either but i agree with him re: the 3 songs he mentioned of. Sir Tom's recorded so-o-o much stuff but some of it was....well you know

"Delilah", "Green green grass of home", "A minute of your time", "I'm coming home".................all EASY LISTENING hits, around about the same time as Des O'Connor, Vince Hill and Ken Dodd were getting big hits with similar material.
I will say though that Tom's "Stop breaking my heart" is a favourite on the Northern Soul scene. (Seriously).

Toms a living legend !
hes not + never was in the same league as ELVIS but then who ever was !
he has an unbelievably strong voice , even now as a pensioner !
he was playing vegas before our man & after, that may not be a great thing as such but hes survived & had fun doing it !

his last 2 albums are extremely good, again more so, considering the man is a pensioner !

he has done his fare share of cheese ALL through-out his carear but then he didnt spend the peak of his life making stupid films did he ,Delilah or 'theres no room to rumba in a sports car' ??????

i also truly believe that hes fully aware of his cheesiness & its all done tongue in cheek !

im actually going to see sir TOM the night b4 my birthday, 15 miles from my house & i absolutely cant wait !

Good on you my friend. I'm sure it will be a great show. Be sure to yell out "Two Brothers" if he asks for requests  A most underrated and underappreciated song IMHO.

PS Nice that we agree on something.

Hey Tony,

Just found this one by Tom called "I Know" -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lurXi_JP8Yk

It's bloody awesome !!!! I have not heard it before. Have you ?

Therefore, there is loads more to Tom than the 3 bull-shit songs you pointed out in your first post.

If you enjoyed listening to 'I Know', you may like 'I Wake Up Crying' as well. Both songs are taken from the album '13 Smash Hits'. One of Tom's best albums from the 60's.

Good on you shakin' My friend have you heard or seen this one by TJ -

It's a bloody good version that rivals Joe Tex's. Just vintage stuff !

I have checked but it appears Tom did not wax his version and only sang it on t.v. a few times.

Didn't know this -great- version of 'Show Me', do know that he sang it in the early 80's during the US Coast To Coast tv specials.

Tom Jones has artistic credentials in spades, whilst, if you knew your charts and popular music the term ''Easy Listening'' wouldn't be tossed around as an insult wrapped in feint praise. Easy listening records accounted for a vast majority of THE biggest hits of the '50s, '60s and '70s e.g. Distant Drums, Strangers in the Night, Spanish Flea, My Way, Release Me, What a Wonderful World, Help Yourself, Delilah, The Wonder of You, Tie a Yellow Ribbon, We've Only Just Begun, Annie's Song etc. etc. etc.

And there's no bereft of quality or lack of artistic merit under an umbrella term that side-steps the fact that there's a counter-point to the pop-buying youth market -- and always has been. And that's a force to be reckoned with and a lot to admire, appreciate and be impressed by.

Thanks my friend. The only thing that remains in his illustrious career is a record of Blues and Blues standards. Even at 71 I believe he is gifted enough. Said so in upload you tube of "Love Sweet Love" (a blues number).

For a start I nominate "Reconsider Baby" :smt003

Tom's album with Jools Holland is superb and contains some fine rhythm and blues. I recommend it highly.

What's the link above? I can't get it to play.

Tom has sung a great deal of blues and rhythm and blues over the years, if not commited such to record. He has sang so often great rhythm and blues with Jools Holland and on Jools' Later and Hootenanny. He also contributed to Martin Scorsese's The Blues documentary, along with Jeff Beck, if memory serves me right.

It's a song called "Love Sweet love" from a CD called "From The Vaults".

Tom recorded it in the early 1980's but it did not come out until 1998. Very Bluesy tune!

Oh, yeah. Nice song, good set.

Do you have Tom's album The Lead and How to Swing It? That's got some good stuff on it; If I Only Knew being an engaging, tongue-in-cheek slice of jazzed-up funk. For want of a better description . . .

PS some idiot of a woman called fredajoy uploaded this before but it was poorer sound and at a slow speed. I sent her a comment and asked her to "remove this crap and upload it at it's correct speed" (my exact words) . Not only did she remove my comments and deny it but she banned me from commenting on her video's. There's another two tracks she uploaded that are CRAP  .
