I've been impressed by the German label Filmjuwelen, especially their fine releases of the Val Lewton films. But their blu ray of Mario Lanza's final film, For the First Time, is a mess. A German Print is used, which has seen much better days, with numerous scratches and damage, and jumps at the end of each reel. There are also a number of cuts. The colour is downright gaudy - far too bright. The picture is sharp and the transfer is fine, but it looks worse than the dvd did.
As for the film, it's far too sentimental for its own good, with Lanza falling in love with a deaf girl. But Lanza is in excellent voice - although not heard too great effect on the blu ray - and the soundtrack contains a great deal of genuine opera superbly sung. It's such a shame he didn't get to provide be himself on the operatic stage. However, he looks tired and ill, and older than his 37 years. At times, he appears to be out of breath, and even struggling to walk, and his weight fluctuates from scene to scene. It's entertaining enough, as undemanding fluff, and a distinct improvement over Seven Hills of Rome. But Lanza could, and did, do better.
One can only wonder what Lanza would have done had he lived into the 1960s. Could he have kept making these modest films? I doubt it. The traditional musical was on the wane, and he was hardly going to make beach movies. The concert stage or Vegas probably would have been his destiny, but he was volatile and unreliable, and one can only wonder if he could have coped with that kind of lifestyle.
