According to the book "Live at the international" Kieran Davies Elvis introduce Roy Orbison on the February 22nd midnight show 1970 after Suspicious minds. (see page 154)

Unfortunately on my AR of this date there is no intro of Roy after S. Minds. Anyway, looking forward to the scans.

Seems like there's some disorder in dates....

Well, some sources date the 22 MS (released as Rock In Black, King of Vegas Vol. 3, and Ruling Vegas) as the 23 DS, according to Francesc's website.

There are three shows towards the end of the season in which Elvis sings See See Rider and skips the Walk A Mile/Ghetto medley in some form or fashion. The only one with a confirmed date is the 23 CS. These three shows may have very well been all in a row.

This very well could be the scenario:

22 MS: James plays opening notes of Walk A Mile, but Elvis stops him and tells him to play See See Rider. Elvis introduces Roy Orbison after Suspicious Minds.

23 DS: The entire Walk A Mile is performed and a portion of In The Ghetto before Elvis apparently stops them again and sings See See Rider instead. Elvis Introduces Stephanie Powell, Gary Lockwood, Johnny Rivers, Jimmy Webb, and Kenny Rogers after the band introductions. (I haven't actually heard this one, I'm just going off the notes. If this is wrong, please correct me.)

23 CS: Elvis tells the band to play Walk A Mile, then "No no no, forget it; do See See Rider." Closing show.

Well the info about Feb 22 MS probably being Feb 23 DS stems from me..but cannot remember where I got it from..too long ago..
Now it would be interesting if anybody can confirm ..these celebs..Stephanie Powell, Gary Lockwood, Johnny Rivers, Jimmy Webb, and Kenny Rogers being at the DS of Feb 23...would of course make sense since it was closing night..

I found some lost files that indicate that Feb 22, 1970 MS is just a guessed date..so the Feb 23, 1970 DS idea would even make more sense,

cool thanks Cisco... i made a note now regarding this 23/2/70 D/S. :D

You got to make a few more notes..but handle with care at the moment..

20.2.DS is 22.2.MS

20.2.MS is correct

22.2.DS is 20.2.DS

22.2.MS is 23 DS

Anybody ?

I can buy that this show is from closing night. Elvis introduces a slew of celebrities during this show which was not uncommon for closing nights. February 23, 1973 had the same situation.

Keep in mind though, no celebrities were introduced during the actual closing show in 1970.

I have some reels that once belonged to Maria Luisa Davies, she probably got them from Rex Martin or maybe some of her friends from the states?
On this reel tape that Elvis introduce Roy Orbison it is dated February 22 dinner show, but I also have reels with different dates and they hold the same show so even when my reels is from 1970 or something like that they had date problems as well.

A Barbara Dobie filmed one show where Elvis wore the Blue Suit. I have this dated as Midnight Show 21st. She saw 8 show from 18th to 23rd of February 1970. She claims that Elvis wore only white suits except this one time on the shows she saw, sadly I don`t know exactly what shows she saw.

Well, I can tell you for sure that the Fringe suit did not exist in February, and if Elvis sang "suit turn blue" on the Roy Orbison show, he was probably wearing the Blue Broquade rather than the white one.

As for the rest of it, I don't know what to make of it. All of the setlists were about the same, and it's hard to put all of these shows in place when they happened so close to each other and are so similar.

It's the stuff headaches are made out of...

I did some research and I now know that these shows are all circulating around in collectors circles for
almost 15 years with just guessed dates. The MC tapes were dated very sloppily back then and dates were given that were most likely. These were 20 D/M and 22 D/M. The only one being a hit was 20 M.
I have compared dialogue described in the book and only 20 M matches with our AR. Our 22 DS matches with the dialogue described for 20 DS, The lady was there so I have no doubts. It matches perfectly.
I come back about it.

Re: Roy Orbison visiting Feb 1970 Elvis show

the Kieran book dialogue may also have been transcribed using tapes like these.

The suit names for the shows came from another source and may not be correct.
The tape listings of the contents of the shows are correct. There is room for speculation on some of the dates though.

And the change in Love me tender, not necessarily means Elvis wore a blue suit! He also did it on the closing show and we know he didn't wore blue there. Only when he sang Suit turn blue it would mean he wore a blue suit.

If that lady mentioned Elvis wore a blue suit only once and she visited a couple of shows then this show must be within that time frame.

After introducing Roy in 1976 December show Elvis sang 1 line of "It's over" in the style of Roy. Actually 1 line may be too much said. It was just the title of the song.

It didn't happen, but Elvis did introduce Roy in Vegas '76 as (from memory) "another of the greatest singers in the world" (the other one being Englebert Humperdinck).

The story goes that Roy, who had been critical of Elvis' recent form, could only speak well of him, after that introduction.

I assume the wrote the sheets right after she visited and/or recorded the shows back then. Not decades later. She is an eye witness. She was probably listening to the tapes and wrote it down. Forget about the jumpuist. thats all speculation in this case.

One example: The dialogue before Long Tall Sally matches word for word in her notes with the show we had dated as Feb 22 DS but it was the 20.2.DS she described. Why should I doubt it ?
We had old MCs some 15 years ago with multiple dates on them. Fans tried to find suitable dates and chose the most likely ones. But thats also kind of ,lottery. They had one match with Feb 20 MS. I have no doubt they did the best which was possible 15 years ago. But now we have more possibilites and more knowledge.

It must be possible to find out which particular show these celebs visited when they got introduced by Elvis

Stephanie Powell, Gary Lockwood (happened at the word’s fair), John Phillips, Johnny Rivers, (writer of By the time I get to P) Jim Webb, Kenny Rogers.

Our old date was a guess.. Feb 22 MS...it is most likely Feb 23 DS...the closing night.

Yes, unfortunately that is the story that is told but it's complete nonsense........There was only ever one time that Roy was negative about Elvis. The source comes from a 1974 issue of Crawdaddy magazine, in no way the most reliable source. It's not even a proper interview.........

Hang on a minute, there. Last time we discussed this, I pointed out that you had confused the interview, with the author's blog about the interview. An easy mistake. Are you now saying that you have seen/got the actual interview?

It was actress Stephanie Powers. Who went on to star in the TV show "Hart To Hart" and who at the time was married to Gary Lockwood.:)
