Teamwork: Advice for sound ratings for AR`s

Tue Dec 09, 2014 9:57 pm

The recent sound ratings by different members made me think about a scale that can be used as a general guide..I have a suggestion..feel free to amend me...we take the best suggestion perhaps with
examples..

10...the best sounding soundbooth recordings like August 20, 1973 MS (A Profile Vol. 1)
09...the second best sounding sondbooth recordings like many of the recent Straight Arrows
09...very good sounding audience recordings like Pittsburg 1976, Indy 1977 or the Rennie tapes
08...good sounding AR`s like Another Opening Night 1972 where you still hear all clearly dispite some audience noise..
07...still good ..but a bit distant with some crowd noise.
06...you can hear what Elvis sings but not all that he is talking ..a bit muffled..more distant and some disturbing cowd reactions...many tour shows...
05...plain average..all that cannot be scaled exactly...not good but also not that bad
04...muffled...many disturbing crowd reactions...not too far away from the stage yet..so okay with Elvis singing..but his talking is hard to understand now.
03...loud crowd...too distant...more muffled...but hey,...its still Elvis and you have to listen carefully to understand at least some of his talking..
02...you can hear Elvis singing and what he is singing..no talking understandable..
01..is it Elvis ?

A 1-10 scale may be too complicated.
I mean is Pittsburgh really 2 points down vs the booth tapes?
I don't think so, in fact I think it's better as some booth tapes sound a bit hollow in my humble opinion.

A 1-5 scale will do knowing 5* could be the very best out there :)

6....Indy.....Pittsburg,..all soundbooth recordings
5...you hear Elvis and band clearly ...some crowd noise...
4....you can still hear all..but bit muffled..with crowd..Average...
3...you hear Elvis singing but not all of his talking..too distant..crowd noise and hiss
2...very muffled...much crowd and distant...you hear the songs...but hardly what he is talking
1...forget it..

The scale used through the years on most lists with AR is:

1 = poor
2 = fair
3 = good
4 = very good
5 = excelent

It comes close to your proposal with 1-6; on Elvisoncd.com there's a same kind of soundgrading.

Can you give attributes..? Dont you think "average" is missing between fair and good ?

Fair and average are used at the same time on most lists. Some people uses the first qualifiction ; others use average. Both think the same about the sound. Most of the bad tapes / cdr are used for reference purposes; not to listen a whole concert without getting pain in the ears.

Then I think between poor and fair (average) a rating is missin. Poor ist the likes of Cleveland /Norfolk July 1975..Hampton Roads 1972 AS...the shows where you hear next to nothing...then we had shows like Aimes Iowa which are bad, too..but at least you can make out what he is singing..

Ciscoking this isn't going to work just for the fact that everyone's sound system varys in quality in itself. Is my rating with a pair of $10,000 speakers going to be the same as someone else with a $200 set? and we're not into Audio components yet.
How could this be accurate with multiple opinions ? Makes no sense to me .

You are right and I have dropped the idea..too many factors...one should also differ between casino and tour shows...because casino shows naturally have better sound..

On the other hand,. if was your lone opinion on these, that would be good enough for me. :wink:
