ELVIS ON TOUR - THE APRIL 1972 TOUR (THE RECORDINGS)

#999401

Post by AHM1977 »

For the April tour, MGM was filming Elvis On Tour. I will not going too deep into the movie, but the movie was giving us a lot of live, backstage and rehearsal material for this tour. Most of the material has been cleared out by dates and where it was shot. However, there is some cuts that has been "left" out. One of them shows Jackie Kahane's warm-up act. If anyone knows which show it is taken from, please let us all know. In additional to this, I feel I've got a lot of gaps on the audience recordings from this tour, since my collection have to much incomplete tracks. We got 12 shows from this tour on tape, and some tracks from the April 8th 1972, Knoxville show.

April 5th 1972 - Buffalo, New York - Audience Recording with bad sound

The opening show from this tour gives us a show with a lot of excitement from the audience, and a setlist that gives us a good and various show. Too bad the sound is bad, I would love to have a recording of this show with very good sound. The Opening theme and the Introduction Of The Band is missing here.

That's right, on the cdr "Red Lion In Detroit" it runs about eight seconds longer.

When WDVX radio broadcast this segment last year, I was thrilled. I sent a request mail to the radio station, hoping they would broadcast the whole show. To my disapointment it never happend. But at least it proves that one of the shows this day was recorded.

April 9th 1972 Afternoon Show - Hampton, Virginia - Audience Recording with bad+ sound

A great show with an interesting setlist. Unfortunately the sound is distant and dull, but if you take a listen to the show, I'm pretty sure you all get the same feeling as I do. This is just a great and very well performed show with an Elvis in a really great mood. Don't Be Cruel got a special treatment after the medley of Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel which is very delightful, follow by a fast and cool Jailhouse Rock. And on top of that, Elvis does One Night and Hound Dog before he slows down with a beautiful version of Help Me Make It Through The Night. After Bridge Over Troubled Water, Elvis usually does Suspicious Minds, so when Elvis says Love Me Tender, the band goes straight to the intro of Suspicious Minds before Elvis stops them, and after a false start, Elvis does Love Me Tender. Elvis gots a tremendous applause after An American Trilogy, before he goes to the Heartbreak Hotel the way only Elvis can do it. So it's just one more thing to say, if only..........

April 9th 1972 Evening Show - Hampton, Virginia - Soundboard Recording
Well known show from MGM's Elvis On Tour movie. It has been released many times on CD, and the only problem with the releases is that the three songs after See See Rider is left out on all of them (I Got A Woman/Amen, Never Been To Spain and You Gave Me A Mountain). For my cdr set, I have filled in I Got A Woman/Amen and You Gave Me A Mountain to make a more complete show. Never Been To Spain is still unreleased as soundboard, however we got them all on the audience recording of the show (released as Long Lost In Hampton Roads. The sound here is not the best (too distant and dull). The show is itself is quite good, and when we are able to see the most of the show on dvd, makes it one of my favorite shows.

April 10th 1972 - Richmond, Virginia - Soundboard Recording
Another great show that we got from the soundboard. The show got a good setlist, and Elvis does a great job as the world's number one entertainer.
Among great songs, Elvis also does an one-liner of Carry Me Back To Old Virginia. Lawdy Miss Clawdy is incomplete.

Agree, it's most likely the tape switch

April 11th 1972 - Roanoke, Virginia - Audience Recording with very bad sound
The Roanoke show gives us a one liner of Turn Around, Look At Me and Carry Me Back To Old Virginia. Otherwise Elvis is in a very great mood and delivers a quality show with some funny moments. Don't Be Cruel gots the "kick you a**" line and Are You Lonesome Tonight has the "bold head and wish you had hair" line. Elvis also does a very long version of Release Me (3:11). The show has a very good setlist, and there's no doubt in my mind that the Civic Center in Roanoke must have been a very fantastic place to be this day.
It's a shame that the sound on this recording is so bad, with many incomplete tracks (see tracklist below). However, there is another source of this recording, but unfortunatly, I don't have it, but I think there's someone who give us some information about this other souce  .

On my end the 2001 Theme is missing, Mountain is incomplete on last words (compare), Polk Salad Annie is incomplete at the beginning, How Great Though Art has something missing in the middle. My source includes For The Good Times after the intros which are complete.

I had 4 sources of this show and just kept the most complete one. The sound is simply too bad on all sources, some might just have been copy faults.

I took a double check to compare from my side, and you're right, How Great Thou Art has a part missing in the middle, and the very last note is missing on You Gave Me A Mountain. :smt006

BTW, I'll check if I can get the same source as you have, and put them together to an even more complete show.
