ELVIS - LAKE TAHOE 1973 (MAY 1973 - THE RECORDINGS)

Sun Oct 02, 2011 12:43 am

Elvis did 26 shows during his 1973 Lake Tahoe engagement. So far we only got 6 shows + 2 songs from the Midnight Show on May 13th. I think Elvis is in the same mood as he was during the filming of TTWII three years earlier.
He does very good shows and his humour is just great. So if you ever wonder why you like Elvis, take a listen to these shows. Here's an overview of the recordings we've got from this engagement.

May 6th 1973 - Midnight Show - Audience Recording with good sound

A very good and funny show where Elvis welcomes the audience by introduce himself as Glen Campell. There's a very good setlist here, and with Elvis at his best, it's just perfect. When Elvis sets the chord for You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, Elvis begins to hummin' Surrender and Glen Hardin follow with a piano riff. Elvis gives a great version of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me afterwards.
About two minutes into Fever, Elvis breaks out in laughter, but managing to hold it back again, and does the rest of the song. "Uncle Sam" is seen with Bald Headed Sally during Long Tall Sally.

May 7th 1973 - Midnight Show - Audience Recording with good sound

Great show and with a good audience recording of it, you just get a great feelin' of being an Elvis fan when you listen to it. Elvis got those funny comments, and sings like just Elvis can. Elvis welcomes the audience to the International before he asks "Where am I". Elvis changes the lyrics in Long Tall Sally to "Well, Long Tall Sally, She's real sweet, she's got everything that J.D. needs".......and "Old" Ed is seen with her.

May 9th 1973 - Midnight Show - Audience Recording with very bad sound

The sound of this recording is very bad, it seems like the tape has gone through some "hard times" before it was transfered to cdr. You can still hear that Elvis does a very good show here. This is the earliest (first?) show we can hear the Rock Medley. Elvis sings the words "Your Love" before he does the Rock Medley. James Burton is the "victim" in Long Tall Sally.

A great show with enjoyable sound. In this show we got the first version of Help Me Make It Through The Night for this engagement, and it's really a great version of classic song. It's a little funny too...when he sings "Help me shake...make it through the night". The first few seconds of What Now My Love is missing on this recording.

May 11th 1973 - Dinner Show - Audience Recording with good sound

This is the only Dinner Show we have from this engagement. Elvis sings one line of Lonely is a shepard before he sings Love Me. This time is Charlie Hodge seen with Long Tall Sally during the Rock Medley. During the last part of the Rock Medley (Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On) Elvis sings "Shake rattle and roll" instead of "Shake, Baby, Shake". The show has a funny Band Introduction. Bridge Over Troubled Water gets one false start and an encore reprise afterwards.

May 13th 1973 - 3 A.M. SHOW - SOUNDBOARD RECORDING + AUDIENCE RECORDING

This show is available from the soundboard and from the audience. For this overview, I included both, since the two releases fill out each other.
A great show with an interesting setlist where Elvis includes songs like My Way, Funny How Time Slips Away, Faded Love, It's Over and one verse of Release Me. I'll Remember You gets a false start by Elvis when he tries to sing it in wrong key and sings "Alfie". It's the first time I hear Elvis laughin' and foolin' around with this song. We almost got a whole laughin' version of this song here. The laughter continues a little while into I Can't Stop Loving You, but the last minute of I Can't Stop Loving You is just Fantastic to hear. Elvis really shows the strength in his voice here.
After a strong version of Bridge Over Troubled Water with an encore reprise, Elvis wants to sing The Impossible Dream, but the orchestra dosen't have it, then he ask for For The Good Times (and sings one line of it) before he does Funny How time Slips Away. If you listen to this show, you can hear Elvis is uncertain of some of the lyrics of My Way and It's Over.

The intros are missing on the AR of the May 13, 1973 3 AM show. It should be worth a mention.
And the reprise of the 2001 Theme at the end is missing on the SB.

I know, and we need another 1973 Tahoe show. Why? The 3 A.M. show is special, being the third show in, what, six or seven hours, and all that. Even though the other shows are similar, they will be normal shows and thus a fairer representation of this season. That said, all 3 A.M. shows should be released, including the one from Tahoe ’74. Since it is available on bootleg, FTD must issue a twofer, preferably with the opening show on disc 1, if they have it. If not, then another concert, perhaps the last two of the engagement. Not that there is any rush with another May 1974 show. Opening and closing shows are always special, whether it’s from a tour or hotel engagement.

Another possibility would be a combo of Tahoe 1973 and 1974.

That, too, is also certainly possible. Don’t forget to document the remaining 1976 tours and the April/May 1977 one.

I think the last time was in january-february '74. Those setlists were quite strong and he talked relatively little between songs.
