ELVIS ON TOUR - JUNE/JULY 1973 (THE RECORDINGS)

Mon Sep 26, 2011 11:33 pm

Here's an overview of the recordings we've got from Elvis' second tour of 1973 (June 20th to July 3rd 1973). To start with, Elvis delivers very good shows all the way through this tour (I saved some time here, doesn't have to write that for every show :D ).
This tour is just great, and I think the evolution of the Rock Medley is very interesting on this tour.
Elvis also refer to the Aloha From Hawaii show before he sings I'll Remember You throughout this tour, and J.D. Sumner is the "target" for Long Tall Sally all the way (except from june 22nd). Elvis started the tour in Mobile, Alabama and ended the tour in Atlanta, Georgia.

June 20th 1973 - Mobile, Alabama - Audience Recording with bad sound (distant and a little dull)

The tour opening show. We hear a serious Mr. Presley with very little talking and joking. Elvis does How Great Thou Art with a great reprise. The Rock Medley is done for the last time without Jailhouse Rock, and the target for Long Tall Sally is, of course, J.D. Sumner. The recording is complete from the Strauss opening to the announcement.

June 22nd 1973 - Uniondale, New York - Audience Recording with fair sound

The first of four great shows performed at the Nassau County Veterans Memorial Coliseum. A very standard setlist for us show lovers, with a serious singer who does a great job. First time we hear Elvis puts in Jailhouse Rock in the Rock Medley, and this time, Charlie Hodge is the "victim" in Long Tall Sally. Otherwise, all songs are highlights here (at least to me). The show is complete from the Strauss opening to the announcement.

June 23rd 1973 - Afternoon Show - Uniondale, New York - Audience Recording with fair+ sound

Elvis' second show in Uniondale has a more exciting setlist for us concert collectors. Love Me Tender has a funny start, showing Elvis' sense of humour. After a normally fast version of All Shook Up, Elvis does a version of Don't Be Cruel without the usual medley with Teddy Bear. The recording is complete from the Strauss opening to the announcment.

Elvis' third show in Uniondale also have the same funny start for Love Me Tender as the second show have. During the Rock Medley you can hear Charlie Hodge singing as well as Elvis. After The Rock Medley, Elvis goes over to Heartbreak Hotel with some changed lyrics...."You'll stay at the airport baby". Elvis also gives us a special tune when they goes into Hound Dog.
It sounds like Charlie Hodge gets some water or something after Elvis has introduced him (listen to the reaction in the audience). The show is complete from the Strauss opening to the announcement.

June 24th 1973 - Uniondale, New York - Audience Recording with fair++ sound

The recording of Elvis' fourth show in Uniondale runs a tiny bit too slow. Elvis starts out with a very cool version of See See Rider. It seems like Elvis gets some underwear throwned up on the stage, cause after You Gave Me A Mountain, Elvis comments... "There's gotta be some naked people out there........." :D .
The Rock Medley is a little special in this show since Elvis goes from Mama Don't Dance to Flip Flop And Fly back to Mama Don't Dance and then to Shake Rattle And Roll before he goes over to Jailhouse Rock. How Great Thou Art get an encore reprise here.
Hound Dog is incomplete on this recording (there's a little gap in the middle of the song, which I repaired for my cdr). The Band Introductions and most of Can't Help Falling In Love is missing on this recording. More complete sources excists.

June 25th 1973 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Audience Recording with good sound (with minus)

We got two or three different souces from this show which is the first of two shows at The Civic Center Arena in Pittsburgh. Here we also got a special version of the Rock Medley (see tracklist below). While Elvis doing Fever you can hear the audience sings along and clap their hands. Elvis also does two of my favorites here, Johnny B. Goode and Help Me Make It Through The Night.
After the Introduction Of The Band, Elvis says that it is his manager's birthday today, and then giving the colonel a scarf (although the colonel's birthday is the day after, on June 26th). For the record, we got statements from three fans who attended the show, that he said this on the June 25th show. In the fact of this, there's a possibility that they had a little gathering to celebrate the colonels birthday earlier this day. Another possibility is that the colonel would only be at this show and not on the show the day after.

The recording of the June 27th show in Cincinnati has the opening and the first part of See See Rider missing (the complete version of See See Rider exicsts on another source). It is the first show that Elvis sings Help Me Make It Through The Night very early in the show. The Rock Medley has got a more "normal" set of songs. Elvis did four shows at The Omni in Atlanta on this tour. The recording of this first show here has the opening and the first part of See See Rider missing. I also had to do a speed correction for this recording.
The setlist is interesting and Elvis dedicates Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel to a little girl named Lucille. He also dedicates Something to Linda....uhh... :smt005 (read the song "Something"). How Great Thou Art gets an encore reprise again. Elvis introduces Glen Hardin as Glen Hardner.......... Elvis also sings a one liner of Vaya Con Dios before he sings I'll Remember You.

Elvis went back to Atlanta to do his fourth show at The Omni. It is also the closing show for this tour. The setlist is interesting and longer than earlier on the tour. For the last show on this tour Elvis gives us songs like My Way, Memphis Tennessee and Release Me (Probably the only time Elvis sings them on this tour).
"It's my second home, boy...", Elvis states after See See Rider. Elvis introduces his father Vernon and Linda Thompson after the Introduction Of The Band.
He gives us You Gave Me A Mountain and What Now My Love with spoken lyrics during this show.
I think this show and the sound on this recording is the best we have from this tour.

Very interesting post.
I would like to let you know that I have another recording of Long Island June 24 on casette tape. On my tape Also sprach Zarathustra is missing and also the Closing vamp, but the Introductions are complete and Can't help falling in love is complete too. Oh by the way the sound is excellent for an audience tape.

For the June 24th show, I have used a cdr called "Rockin' the Nassau Coliseum".......
and for the June 27th source I have used a cdr called "Live in Cincinnati" where the running time of See See Rider is 1:27, the first part is not there..... :(

When I has finished this one, I think I just go step by step back in time, and ends up with Vegas 1969. There after I'll take 1974 up to 1977. :smt006

Yepp, it is an overview over the concerts/shows we have available, and it is important to have it complete. ::rocks

You got it right all the way here. And as you state EVERYBODY IS INVITED TO THE PARTY........ANY HELP AND CORRECTION IS MUCH APPRICATED So for those who have something to add. Please post it!. As I've wrote earlier, I think this will lead us to something cool. It's so many details in the shows and the recordings that needs to be taken up in the light. I've already found so much answers by doing this, and for a maniac like me, these things are important (Obsession or hobby?? ). So again, I can't quit before (as you wrote) ALL of them is done. :smt006

AHM1977 wrote:June 29th 1973 - Atlanta, Georgia - Audience Recording with fair+ sound
