Audience Recordings - My Picks

On dozens of occasions, I've received PMs (two this week) from different people asking my opinion on certain audience recordings. Many people do not collect them, but many, like myself, do. I have compiled a list of audience recorded concerts that I have on original factory-pressed silver CDs. I don't do CDRs in any way, shape or form, so I'm only including real CDs in my list. It is compiled mostly by those with the best sound, however, there are a few that are included because of historical significance or just downright good shows. Again, mostly because of very good sound quality. I have many, many more in my personal collection, but here is my list of some of the best. For collectors of audience recordings, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Not necessarily true. However, there are a lot more higher quality shows (sound) from this period. I have many shows from much earlier in the decade. Unfortunately, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired.

Here we go again - not every post, but the percentage is rising!
Anyway, i like many audience recordings. For example the live Moody Blue is much better on the audience recording than soundboard because of the enthusiastic audience reaction.
While many people yeard for Indy '76 in soundboard, i quite like to hear the audience from the perspective that we have on the bootlegs

I actually went to the search option of this message board and typed in "best audience recordings" to see if I was still missing something or not.

A very useful post by Rob, that's a fellow that works here btw, useful because of the fact that these last couple of years we are flooded with AR and it's hard to keep track of not alone what's out there, but especially what is worthwile and what is not. It would have been nice then if some more comments would have been made about the contents of this list, whether you can add anything or think something does not belong there, what do you think of the selections, keeping in mind that it is a personal thing.

And I guess now it'll have a deserved second chance, before slipping into oblivion again.

I’m shocked that you don’t mention On the Road Again (Memory Records). That concert is sensational, and the sound is outstanding.

King of the Neon Jungle should be mentioned too. It’s way better than some of the 1972 shows listed above. No Fooling Around comes in less than average sound, but it’s noticeable better than Another Opening Night (same show, different source).

The Memory Records release (Shining in Portland) is much better than the Live Archives title. Also, Turning Up the Heat in Las Vegas is a decent show in good sound.

Raised on Vegas comes in less than average sound. The show is great, though, and the setlist pretty rare. A Change of Mind could be mentioned too. Good sound.

The first title is great and should be hunted down. The second sounds dull, like it was recorded through a brick wall, clearly one of the weakest Memory Records releases from an audio perspective. That’s what happens when they use a 20th generation copy of a fifth generation copy of an early generation copy of the master tapes (or something like that). The Keep the Fire Burning and El in El Paso soundboards suffer from the same problem. The Forum show comes in less than average sound.

On dozens of occasions, I've received PM's (two this week) from different people asking my opinion on certain audience recordings. Many people do not collect them, but many, like myself, do. I have compiled a list of audience recorded concerts that I have on original factory-pressed silver CD's. I don't do CDR's in any way, shape or form, so I'm only including real CD's in my list. It is compiled mostly by those with the best sound, however, there are a few that are included because of historical significance. Again, mostly because of very good sound quality. I have many, many more in my personal collection, but here is my list of some of the best. For collectors of audience recordings, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Great list. Only i cant agree with When Elvis Comes Marching In - Chicago, May 1, 1977. The sound is far from good.

I have the Lincoln 1977 on cd released by P.O. 220. Never heard of the label Sanfi. The rlease i have is not the best quality.

Well, Rob, I’m going to comment on some of these shows. My remarks are in red inside your original post, so sorry for messing up the quote. Unfortunately, that can’t be helped.

No Fooling Around - Las Vegas 8/4/72 O.S. (Ampex CD 001) (Released 2003)

King of the Neon Jungle should be mentioned too. It’s way better than some of the 1972 shows listed above. No Fooling Around comes in less than average sound, but it’s noticeable better than Another Opening Night (same show, different source).

Can't agree at all. I'd say the sound is very good being sourced from an audience recording of the show. It is much better than on many other titles both you and Rob list. Too bad it is not complete as Another Opening Night, though complete, is sonically inferior - no doubt about that. Just my two cents.

That opening night show comes with pops and clicks and tape speed problems, maybe even flanging sounds. The sound quality is acceptable if we look beyond this, but the tape drag ruins several songs.

I wasn’t aware that the second source is complete, whereas the first one isn’t. On the other hand, I haven’t listened closely to those CDs in ages, and now I don’t have them in my possession anymore. What’s the difference in contents?

A very useful post by Rob, that's a fellow that works here btw, useful because of the fact that these last couple of years we are flooded with AR and it's hard to keep track of not alone what's out there, but especially what is worthwile and what is not.

On "No Fooling Around" The Wonder Of You, Introductions and An American Trilogy are missing but the bonus cuts make up for it nicely.

I listened to the show the other day and will stick to what I've said before. It's a very enjoyable show with very good sound. The pops and the clicks are hardly noticable and the dragging is more a problem of the bonus section and not the main show.

A very useful post by Rob, that's a fellow that works here btw, useful because of the fact that these last couple of years we are flooded with AR and it's hard to keep track of not alone what's out there, but especially what is worthwile and what is not.

Ain't it funny how time slips away ? Threads like this one have more of an ongoing value, that is beyond the mere topical ones, because each year brings one or more fine additions or even replacements of existing releases, and everybody who isn't categorically against AR, should take notice, it's an Elvis community after all.

Together with Ken's suggestions, we have a total of 80 different quality AR releases, give or take a few. Wow.

Voldto, please don’t continue. Rob said no CD-Rs, and I’ve gotta agree with him. Besides, I’ve already mentioned two of the titles you list. The Better Than Ever release comes in atrocious sound. That’s why it’s not included. The August 26, 1969, midnight show has been released on multitrack.
