Favourite version of I got a Woman ?

I've just rewatched the April 1972 Hampton Roads (blue suit) version of I Got a Woman for he first time in a while and really really enjoyed it as most of us probably skip the usual versions of See See rider and IGAW/Amen as usually they were very similar with every concert but I must say this version mentioned above it outstanding! I believe he's got the best of both worlds from being familiar with the song but also still having an interest in singing it! It is unbelievable!

I never skip any song during any Elvis concert. Yes, the Hampton Roads version is very energetic and committed. However, without at least two dive bombs from J.D., I just can't get into it. This fan prefers a lot of "Welling" before the song and a minimum of two dive bombs afterwards.

But that's just me.

As I've written elsewhere, here are the finest known live recordings of "I Got A Woman" by Elvis:

- March 19, 1955 (Houston)
- May 16, 1956 (Little Rock)
- September 26, 1956 (Tupelo)
- December 15, 1956 (Shreveport)
- March 25, 1961 (Honolulu)
- June 24, 1968 (Burbank)
- August 26, 1969 DS (Las Vegas)


When the song really hits the audience, it sounds like a jailbreak. The Tupelo performance, despite crappy fidelity, is a prime example.

The 1955 Houston recording is crucial because the arrangement is different, yet compelling, and probably very close to the now-lost Sun recording that the trio taped in Memphis the month before.

Elvis' voice on the 1968 backstage recording in Burbank, not to mention his electric guitar, is earth-shaking.

The finest 1969 performance was first bootlegged in 1979 on the Behind Closed Doors box set. It was finally given an official release on FTD's Live In Vegas, and it is glorious.

You can like what you want..you know that I dont care a bit...but this is "the concert years" and not the 50`s. It is clear the OP was referring to 1969 till 1977. You missed the topic. Go and do your math.

You might be shocked to learn Elvis' "concert years" began in 1954. Check it out, you might be amazed. But no Olivia Newton-John covers, I'm afraid. Back then, Elvis preferred to cover bad-ass r&b numbers by singers like LaVern Baker.

harris497, after that stellar, incomparable version from 1969, and all those other marvelous concert (and rehearsal) performances before that, my next choice might be the one seen in "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition," from the 8-11-1970 DS. He's still putting some fire into it, and it shows.

Anyways my favorite version is from Dallas 1976, Elvis seems to have alot fun and is very energetic which makes it an enjoyable listen, though the same could be said for the entire show.

Tweedle Dee !! An immensely dated novelty song, and with insipid lyrics. Not dissimilar in that regard to that other mediocre Winfield Scott number you like to exaggerate the merits of, I'm A Roustabout.

Tweedle Dee does not compare favourably to the contemporary material covered in the 70's

I still prefer the November 8, 1971 version Elvis did at the Spectrum. I say that simply because I got to see it and that influences my choice.
I remember that night so well and have written in detail about a number of times. On this number, Elvis' voice was so strong and powerful as he was letting the lyrics fly. His featured leg movements, his sliding the guitar back and forth as he sang this song along with his hips, the way he jerked the microphone back and forth throughout, made for a really cool experience. When he transitioned into the brief "Amen" piece, he stood up on top of his white boots several times shaking his shoulders as he did and then leaned towards J.D. Sumner at the end of the "Amen" piece. When he returned to "I Got a Woman" he was jerking the microphone back and forth. As they finished the song he stood the microphone upright, squatted down allowing his hand to slide the microphone stand, and then suddenly leaped up slamming his guitar to his left ending the song. A dynamite performance from Elvis.

I always liked the version of IGAW from the New Year's Eve Pittsburgh concert. I like how he repeats the "she's there to love me /all day and night..." part. During the repeat, I love JB's guitar licks.
Can any of you good folk tell me was this the ONLY time that we know of where he sang that part a second time, or are there any other examples?

I'm alsoa huge fan of the Hampton Roads, VA performance from April 9, 1972. The band and Elvis were simply on FIRE that night. BTW, Johnny, I don't think I've ever seen a close up that's as close up as the footage here is of the song.
