Shane -

I've not heard Elvis sing that song !

Does he sing it, or 'talk' his way thru like Telly Savalas ?

I downloaded an audience recording of Elvis singing Breads' "If" in concert a year or so ago but have never managed to date it. The dialogue prior to the song doesn't help where he introduced himself as Tom Jones as I think it's just pasted on. It's a lovely performance of the song but does anyone know when he performed it? I would make a guess on acoustics alone that it was Tahoe or Vegas rather than on tour, but I may be wrong. I would also hazard guess, judging by his voice, at 1975 but again I may be wrong!

Can anyone help?

Shane
I've heard it myself, and I'm certain the song is done by an impersonator. Elvis' intro is grafted on the front to make it seem like it's Elvis singing, but it clearly is not. It's just a fake unfortunately.

I downloaded it too one time, and the mp3 is called: Elvis Presley - If (ultra-rare! live in 1975). This has to be Elvis. Otherwise it's the best imitator I've ever heard.

It's a good isn't it? Makes you wish that he recorded a proper studio version.

If you can post the file and allow us a listen, I'm pretty sure we can tell you in a few seconds whether or not it's Elvis.

E-mail it to me and I'll post it for you, if you like. It's not very difficult. If you can download, it should be easy enough to post.

Like I said, about 5 seconds into it, we'll know the truth.

Mhm the sound is better on your version. It's Orion. I listened to other songs, but this has to be his best Elvis-job..? Of course, some effects and the bad sound has helped. In other songs like Long Black Limousine (terrible version IMO) or Little Sister he doesn't sound so "Elvis".

I'm sorry, Shane. It's a pretty good attempt, but it is not Elvis. Thanks for posting, btw.

I think anyone who has listened to Orion's voice can tell a big difference between Elvis and Orion.

I think Orion had a tremendous voice and would fool the majority of the general public and some fans.

Very much the same way that Jamie Aaron Kelley does on some of his earlier Elvis covers.

I think that JAK is much more closer than Orion is as far as 'sounding like Elvis' is.

How on earth could anyone think this tripe is Elvis? It's way overdone (as usual with impersonators) and the backing sounds like it's from a working men's club.

A load of tosh.

And piffle.

Indeed.

This is not Elvis. The vibrato is overdone and the timbre is a little off. It's a very good try, though. I'm not surprised to hear it's actually Orion.

When I strain to hear every nuance on "If", I'd swear it sounds very much like the legendary Jimmy Ellis.

Wait ... with that splendid, quivering vibrato, it could possibly be the
magical Ral Donner ... yeah, thats it.

Hasn't this song been discussed earlier? I have heard it before. Well it's very close or at least the bad sound makes it difficult to tell. But why would anyone use that intro and ending parts if not just to try to fool us? The sound of the backing music truly gives the feeling of a small club which further implies that this is not Elvis. The singing is almost perfect but in some places it sounds different from Elvis.

I can see that most non Elvis experts would say that this is Elvis. Unfortunately it's not. People trying to fool us like this should be punished.

A friend of mine said that he had downloaded an Elvis song he have never heard before called Rockabilly Rebel. I said yes sure.. He sent it to me and it took about 2 seconds to be certain that this was not Elvis. It sounded like rockabilly from the late seventies or the eighties. Maybe it was some kind of tribute song but to say that it was Elvis really makes you angry. What's the point? I guess the only case when we cannot be 100% sure is when the sound is so bad you cannot hear the voice properly. And in such cases we wouldn't lose much since it couldn't be enjoyed anyway. But so far I haven't heard about any case where it cannot be certified if it is Elvis or not.
