Hawaii '77

#236759

Post by Jim Dandy »

Re the pics found in this week's Candid section http://www.elvis-collectors.com/candid-central/tan77.html
I thought it would be cool if others could post any other pictures they might have that we've not seen.
Also, I understand there was a colour publication in 1978 featuring heaps of rare, never since published Hawaii '77 shots. If anyone could confirm this or even upload photos from that magazine it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Actually, I was surprised how GOOD Elvis looks in these pictures. I wouldn't say he looks "slim" but except for a belly issue, he looks pretty darn good. Most guys on the wrong side of 40 have that issue anyway. He looks really good in the last picture...I think Ginger said that the pills were really exagrerated in 1977. We all know that Elvis took too much pills in 77, but I don't think he was totally out of it the whole time.

It's too bad that he didn't go to Hawaii a week before the CBS special. He could have tanned, gotten some rest, and lost 10 pounds. That would have a made a big difference in his TV appearance. He seemed to be aware of this in 1968, 1969, 1972, 1973, but by 1977, maybe he wasn't quite as interested.....

i think you'll find that Elvis's better health in Hawaii was a VERY temporary thing. He deteriated rapidly thereafter.

Sure
Why don't you show us where he comes in here
He's coming through this door here, there's two doors in this entrance
he comes through this door here in this entrance and then open it back like this
then this one the other door comes back like this.

Nice, thanks! I´m surprised Elvis let himself be photographed that much in Hawaii (but really glad we have these photos of him), I thought he never allowed cameras to be around (at home/in private) in the last few years.

For some reason I kind of like this one. ;)

What is cool about these photos is that it's really rare to see Elvis wear normal street clothes. There aren't that many photos of him in the 70's where he is wearing a normal t-shirt. He looks like your next door neighbour. Well, almost anyway...

Well, it's nice to see Elvis looking relaxed and happy.

If a little heavy.

Not everyone is a sun-worshipper !

I keep pretty covered up on the beach too !

Not that I venture there very often.

Without wishing to start any "bone cancer" threads up again, it was mentioned in Larry's book that there were bruises and blotches on Elvis' skin, which is why he kept covered up.

Also, he wasn't in the best shape, so I'm sure some of it was vanity - especially around his young fiancee.

I was about to say exactly the same thing.

It's great that these pictures exist.

Elvis' battle with weight, whilst in evidence, is also smaller than the myth suggests.

Good stuff.

For sure - I have spoke to fans who attanded his 1977 shows and some of the photographers about 1977 and all say he was not as big as "the myth" - these photos show that there was extra weight, but nothing like what the media have suggested.

Elvis seemed to be very self-conscious about his physical appearance throughout his life, but given his stature, who could blame him? Sure, we saw him in a bathing suit and shirtless in "Blue Hawaii," and this and that; but, there are many other examples in which we saw him covered up with a jacket, even while water skiing!

Two points:

1) There are also other people with their clothes on in these images.

2) Elvis bared parts of his chest on stage right up till the end!

I don't think you can categorically say he's clothed in these pictures solely because of vanity/concerns with weight.
