Elvis - A Legendary Performer Vol 5-6-7

#209846

Post by Kristian Hjelmaas »

Just for the heck of it, I've tried to get a chronological overview of the material featured in the three latest escapes uh releases from Madison in this series.

What I would like you gals and gents to participate in, is to add where the previously released material has been released before, i.e on which cd(s).

I've started to fill in a few - together we'll get a complete overview.

Isn't this fun?

The sax overdubs for 'One Night' were done in 1996 not 1957 if I remember correctly

Also the 3 songs from "Kissin' Cousins" are just one channel removed making it seem as though they are undubbed. With these sessions, the backing tracks were recorded first and then Elvis overdubbed his vocals, so if they were really "Undubbed" they wouldn't include Elvis

Hi Keith!

So what you're saying, is basically that these Kissin' Cousins tracks are faked, i.e they are just tampered with, in order to make them undubbed and to justify the previously unreleased tag?

Now that I have vol 6, I really feel I must get vols 5 and 7. This is a beautifully researched and presented series.

... Maybe a dumb question, when a pre recorded backing track is laid down, and Elvis his vocal later overdubbed, how does one leave out the female voices [ Gold in the...] and the banjo in Smokey ? You cant just cut out one or two parts from a "ready"backing track, except maybe if you have the original RCA tapes? Can it not be the above mentioned parts were seperate overdubs, added later? Or not added yet as in the case of the ones on Legendary???

... Thanks, John! Sometimes I forget some of these "simple"things... I believe these Kissin Cousins mono acetates were part of a large collection of titles auctioned off by Paul Dowling long time ago. Others were from Live a Little,Bonk a Little, those turned up on The Edge of Reality boot cd. So we can asume the KC titles are okay, and not fakes. I would never exspect the Madison people to "doctor" things anyway.

You gotta be kidding!

Do you not own the so-called "long" version of 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' found on Madisons second CD (Don't Think Twice)?

I was not talking about Madison and their releases in general. I just found it appropriate to mention that Madison have used edited/manipulated versions of Elvis songs already on their previous releases...

I just finally heard that recently - thankfully via a CD-R version.

I thought something sounded screwy.

I like extended versions, even fake ones like "It's Only Love"
from the silver box (hear it on Jordan's site on the "Phenomenon"
set) but that song was repetitive as it was.

I always did like the longer
one from the "Memories of Elvis" Vol. 2 LP....

Edited versions can be ok, but only if the producers clearly says what it is.

To release a manipulation as it was something original, now that is stupid!

Three good examples here would be the ultra non-essential bootlegs called:
-"Animal Instinct" - http://home.online.no/~ov-egela/animal.html
-"O Come, All Ye Faithful" - http://home.online.no/~ov-egela/faithful.html
-"Unadulterated recordings" - http://home.online.no/~ov-egela/unadulterated.html

Thanks for that, Oven.

I kind of recall enjoying some of those "different" Christmas versions, however, when hearing them on Jordan's site.

I would hope the
package would be honest.

What, then, of STAX TRAX? I bought it last year despite some
misgivings.

(What's the rap on it?)

You can just cut out one or two parts from an already recorded backing track! Just listen to the following two samples, they are both taken from the "Double Features" release of "Kissin' Cousins", but they are only poor quality MP3 for this test.

Smokey Mountain Boy - with Banjo

Smokey Mountain Boy - without Banjo

I've taken the left channel out of one, then centred it, and the right channel out of the other, then centred it. Then as if like Magic, you have two unreleased versions of exactly the same song!

I did the same thing with 'Gold In The Mountains' and have had that on my site long before it came out on this series.

The bootleggers have been doing this sort of thing for years, taking out channels and claiming they have an undubbed, or alternate take.

As long as the story is told (preferably by the label releasing it),
I don't have a problem with it at all!

We're reduced to enjoying phony "Kissin' Cousins" outtakes,
but then our hero has been AWOL since '77...!

Seriously, bring it all on.

Keith, do you remember when the Italian releases of songs like It Hurts Me (can't remember the others) which came out officially with one channel removed? Oh how excited we were!
Yes I remember those John, they are all now on the bootleg "Easy Come Easy Go".

Ciscoking, I'm not sure if "Stax Trax" and "Yesterday Today" are faked tracks, as I haven't had a chance to fully check these yet, but definately "The Other Side Of Memphis" is. All tracks on this release have channels taken out, from the quadrophonic releases of the original albums.

Well, I'm not that keen on 'extended' versions.

An exception is our own Mike McCoy's excellent 'All I Needed Was The Rain'.

The original was far too short !

Mike's 'fixed' version is very well done and makes it seem like a different recording !

I have a CDR of Vol. 5, but now I feel compelled

Taken ages for Vol 7 to finally turn up in Sydney, but as always Keith is right. I actually wonder if Madison were conned themselves by whoever provided them with the Kissin Cousins tape.

Full review now (finally) on EIN.

I noted . . .
"Elvis overdubbed all his vocals on the ’Kissin Cousins’ soundtrack and ‘Gold In The Mountains’ is supposedly "without the backing vocal overdubs" but it is a scam! Don’t be fooled as in reality this is just a ‘left audio channel only’ version. Not only that but it is in inferior audio quality to make you think that it might be "something special" or an undiscovered acetate! Note that this was the identical hoax with the 3 ‘Kissin’ Cousins’ tracks on 'Legendary Vol.6' so I wonder if someone actually pulled a con on Madison in supplying them with a fake tape? This is easy to replicate at home and in far better quality - just disconnect your right speaker!"

and I had very mixed overall feelings about this release ..

The Verdicts – So while I do really enjoy these strolls though Elvis’ musical legacy, on this CD I had the feeling of having heard too many of these versions before. There is no doubt that Madison has produced some of the highest quality Elvis product on the market but to me this has a slight ‘Colonel Parker’ feel about flogging the product as fast as you can. Surely Volumes 6 & 7 could have been combined to create a single CD release as a worthy follow-up to their excellent Volume 5?

Fabulous – For "Elvis Collectors" this is another high-quality Madison product with magnificent packaging that only shames the official Elvis releases. It will fit perfectly on your shelf next to Volumes 5 & 6.

Pretty Good – For Elvis fans that missed out on the original Bootlegs releases, this could be a nice way to collect several of the best "unofficial" Elvis outtakes that you might need. However, as the CD is not that easy to find, maybe FTD should be providing you with the same product and with even better packaging!

Disappointing – For hard-core Elvis fans more interested in the musical content, this has to be a disappointment. Apart from the BMG tracks and the ‘Kissin’ Cousins’ scam, the majority of the tracks will also sound all too familiar. This is a CD that I am very happy to own, but not one that I would play too often, ’Legendary Vol.5’ was so much better.

Full review here.
I wonder how Volume 8 will be?

Cheers
Piers
