Essential offcial releases

#192222

Post by Elvis-4-Ever »

Hey there,

Which official releases should I buy to give my collection a boost. I am not talking about FTD's, although I know they are official releases, but I mean the regular cd's that you can buy in every store. I am also not talking about Elvis' albums which he released while he was alive, I got all of those.
So far I've got:

* Memories: The 68 Comeback Special
* Sunrise
* An Afternoon in the Garden
* Aloha from Hawaii SE
* Nr's 1's
* 2nd to None.

What about TTWII SE?

Because you're all I have, my boy
You are my life, my pride, my joy
And if I stay, I stay because of you, my boy.

What about the 3 disc Peace in the Valley cd? It looks great but I got the 3 seperate gospel albums. Looks like only cd 3 holds some songs or takes that I don't have. is this worth a buy?

I wonder if TTWII will get the FTD treatment and how it will be presented.

They are all essential, but you could start with ELVIS AT SUN and then go from there with MEMORIES, which, IMHO, is absolutely Fantastic!!!

These 2 are MUSTS!!!

Without a doubt, first and foremost.

However, you are cheating yourself by excluding FTD's. They are a must for Elvis fans.

Elvis4ever, did'nt you read my post?

suspicious minds is a collection of Elvis's memphis 1969 sessions, his first there since 1955 and his best sessions ever! there are great songs like 'wearin that loved on look, long black limousine, i'll hold you in my heart'. on this cd collection, you'll find suspicious minds, in the ghetto, which are number 1 hits and Elvis at his finest. overall, you have to trust me, YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS CD! this IS Elvis at his best, must i exagerrate it more? 8)

I would also search out that last release of Promiced Land the remastering in this is outstanding. Also the last re-release of Moody Blue with all the '76 masters on it.

If funds allow, I'd suggest buying the 50s, 60s and 70s boxed sets.

If not, you really need to hear the Suspicious Minds set - that 1969 studio stuff is phenomenal.

TTWII SE is also a real treat.

If you have to ask....! :roll: :lol:

Seriously, buy with confidence. The '99
"From Elvis In Memphis" CD is great, too, but why not just go
"whole hog" with the more complete set? Well worth it!

Then, hit the imports / bootlegs!

Since you asked about Peace In The Valley, I will offer that I think Amazing Grace is the better gospel release if you are not a completist who needs to have everything which is sounds like you are not. Amazing has all the essentials - including some live and rehearsal material, on two discs with great sound and beautiful artwork.

PITV, besides presenting the original gospel albums in their running order, which is nice, only brings inessential odds and ends to the table: a couple of movie songs, some home recordings, the Ed Sullivan performance of Peace in the Valley. Disc three does not make for a very listenable experience, it's just filling in cracks for those who must have everything.

IMO PITV was only done because Elvis gospels sell like hotcakes. The thing I dislike most about it is the artwork is atrocious as befits a crappy budget bin cassette from the 80's: a blurry low-res photocomposited over a stock shot of some church, looks like it was done in 30 minutes by someone at Kinko's who didn't have time to search for decent photography sources.

I tend to agree with your review on the artwork, but I like the photo they (BMG) used of E for that (Peace In The Valley) release!

I do think that, a little more creativity and imagination, could have been administrated for such a great and comprehensive set...
