#182230

Post by dreambear »

I got inspired of the topic about ROR. I don´t count sacred, christmas, live och compilation albums:

1) Elvis Country
2) Promised land
3) That´s the way it is
4) Moody blue
5) Good times
6) Today
7) From Elvis Presley Boulevard...
8) Now
9) Raised on rock
10)Love letters
11)Elvis (Fool album)

Your lists?

Regards Björn

I would class 'Now' and 'Elvis Fool' as compilations of sorts but they wouldn't make my top 5 anyway. Elvis Country should be top of everyones list. :D

1) Elvis Country
2) That's The Way It Is
3) Promised Land
4) Today
5) Moody Blue

Not a lot between the rest IMO.

2) Elvis Country
3) Love Letters From Elvis
4) Promised Land
5) Good Times

Uh...that's this week...

At the moment, my top 10 list would have to be something like this:

1. That's The Way It Is
2. Elvis Country
3. Promised Land
4. Moody Blue
5. Elvis Today
6. Good Times
7. From Elvis Presley Boulevard
8. Love Letters From Elvis
9. Raised On Rock
10. Elvis Now / Elvis (The Fool Album) joint 10th place! :)

I may had put Elvis Country on top of the list, if it hadn't been for (in my point of view) the ridicilous use of I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago in between the songs!
I have always disliked those "interruptions"...

My personal preference would have to be:

1. That's The Way It Is
2. Moody Blue
3. Promised Land
4. Elvis Today
5. Elvis Now
6. Elvis Country
7. Love Letters from Elvis
8. From Elvis Presley Boulevard

if we were including comps I really enjoy "Welcome To My World"... can't really explain it
other than it was an album I played a lot upon hearing of Elvis' death...

I'm going to use a star (*) rating, with 5 stars being excellent, 4 very good, 3 solid, 2 fair, and 1 poor. I'll also use a 1/2 to rate a given album above it's basic star rating.

That's The Way It Is **** 1/2 (Why not 5 stars? Cause it set the course for the Vegas/orchestrated ballad Elvis that he would follow for the rest of his career. And some of the production is a bit overdone. Nevertheless a must-have.
Elvis Country ***** (Elvis' best 70's studio lp, and one of the best of his career!)
Love Letters From Elvis ** 1/2 (Elvis' fine vocals is what merits the 1/2, but the majority of the material leaves alot to be desired)
Elvis Now ** 1/2 (A hodge podge of material - albeit with some good stuff - mostly from '71, but including stuff from '70 and '69.)
Elvis ** 1/2 (A collection of shelved material from '71 and '72. That some of this stuff was shelved is inexplicable!)
Raised On Rock ** 1/2 (Elvis could've used some vocal viagra on most of the rockers, but the ballads are decent - if mostly unexceptional)
Good Times *** 1/2 (that this is a more cohesive collection than the previous 4 lp's is what merits the 1/2. Several strong performances of better-than-usual material is the main attraction)
Promised Land **** (Elvis' best post 1970 studio lp. The title track is one of his best 70's efforts)
Elvis Today *** 1/2 (almost as good as the PL album)
From EP Boulevard *** (Elvis showing noticable signs of vocal wear and tear combined with depressing, mostly slow material make this one a dull downer of a listening experience. Still, one comes away with the impression that he's trying here, even if he's not firing on all cylinders. What's more you get the impression he's trying to tell us something. Something that came to pass on 8/16/77.)
Moody Blue *** (slapped together affair with 3 spring '77 live tracks supplementing 4 then-current single sides and 2 '76 studio tracks, and another live track from the 1974 Live Onstage In Memphis lp thrown in to make 10 tracks. Unlike the previous lp it offers variety, and even some humor. The studio tracks all feature good to great performances, and Unchained Melody one last shot of magnificence.)

We have almost the same opinions about the albums. "Love letters" gets the most up and down ratings.

Yet none of the 70s albums - not even for one split second - can stand up to the GREAT, the BRILLIANT, SUPERB 50s and early 60s alblums !!!

I utterly disagree. I'd take TTWII and Elvis Country over and above everything else in the Elvis back catalogue. He could do no wrong in 1970 for me.

Jules, you cant compare Mini Coopers to Pink Caddilacs. But what the hell, I responded to this top ten topic , simply because Im so tired of all that 70s talk on this mb.

I have to agree with Jules. I'll take 1969-72 Elvis anyday before I would Elvis in the 50's.

Simply because I'm so tired of all that 50's talk on this mb.

I find it strange Moody Blue catches so much flack but is in so many's top ten and even top five (as it is mine).

I think this record is really underated, unfortunately it was made under strange circumstances and at a terrible time in Elvis' life so it makes it very easy to trash this record. I can tell you though this record gets as much play time as any in my collection (and I have a big one!)

I am just a 70's groovy kind of guy

Of course, you are right, but Elvis did have his moments between 1970 and 1976. All of them are on the 70s box, too.

As for 1970s albums, these recall at least some of the excitement and committment of the early, peerless Presley LPs:

On Stage
That's The Way It Is
Elvis Country

All the rest are inconsistent at best.

5 Promised Land
6 Moody Blue
7 From Elvis Presley Boulevard
8 Love Letters From Elvis

FYI -- the photo is from 1968 or 1969, so BG is pickin' to "US Male" or "Suspicious Minds."
