N8 - Its not a personal dig is it? LOL Are you saying that Elvis shouldn't be considered for any awards or be given some kind of acknowlegement?

The Poll is to see who thinks Elvis should get an honorary Oscar. Does anyone really expect it to happen? I don't but I don't see anything wrong with debating this seriously and I don't see anything wrong with voting for Elvis. I voted in this Poll because I happen to rate his films.Im not voting just because its Elvis. He was a legitimate film star -and few have given Elvis any credit or provided a intelligent reason as to why were his films were so succesful at the box office.

Graceland has a wall of Gold for the sales of his records. So are we saying sales of records mean something but ticket sales for his films don't?

If people consider Andy Warhols screen print of Elvis from Flaming Star a work of art then why shouldn't the film Flaming Star itself be given some respect -along with other ELvis films?

I know what you meant about the humanitarian award (poll) so I won't call you "dumber " even though you think I am not capable of deeper thought. You are right Elvis did many charitable things in private and such awards might be in bad taste. However Elvis was very public with some of his good deeds as well. The Hawaiian charity concerts, the March of Dimes, the Potomac he was also photographed handing over cheques in public. Everyone likes reading about Elvis good deeds so what would be wrong with him being recognised as a humanitarian? He showed up at the Jaycees after all.

Perhaps Awards don't matter that much but I have no problem voting for Elvis in both polls. Its just a Poll after all -its not like anyone of us are making a decision as to who gets the Awards.

Giving awards just for the sake of giving awards & publicity renders the gesture meaningless, IMO.

Of course Elvis should be given awards .... those that he is truly deserving of. Elvis' movie career does not merit an Honorary Oscar by any leap of the imagination.

Elvis had some great potential as an actor, but his true talent was as a singer (and what a truly glorious one he was at that). In accordance with that reality, ............ Elvis receives many meaningfull and substantive awards & acknowledgements.

Good one Paul.

Brian's post has got a lot of attention.

Some here would not agree with anything:-)

Their little Forum world, is their Universe.

In the real world where hard headed media editors judge what they think the great public see, hear, and read, is another matter altogether. The fact some of us are very successful in the real Elvis world, brings on the inevitable jealousy.

What do the oppinions of a half dozen malcontents who think this is THEIR Forum, matter to me.

http://www.disney.20fr.com/ I rest my case-again:-)

The honorary Oscar which aint gonna happen -wouldn't be for Elvis acting but for services to the entertainment industry. In his own way Elvis contributed much to the film industry. One of his lesser films Tickle Me saved one studio from going bust. And has been said he changed the face of the Hollywood musical and kept it going when it was all but dead.

Elvis could do a good job in the place of other actors like 'Flaming Star' which Marlon Brando was considered for. But how many actors could have filled in for Elvis in an Elvis film? None that I can think of.

Elvis had his own talents -its just that his talents don't fit with the Institutions that hand out the Awards. They hand out Oscars to actors who can't sing and can't act very well in films like Moulin Rouge. Elvis was a singer who could act and carry a film on his own. Its seems to me that the Oscars are more for the production than the performer.

Being 100% honest. How many fans would have campaigned and voted for the 1974 live version of HOW GREAT THOU ART to win a Grammy had thier been a Poll and had Elvis not already won a Grammy for that recording?

Elvis is not going to win an Honorary Oscar but I'd like to see him being given more respect for his film career. The books documentarys that dismiss his films are becoming too many - if not more respect then deeper thought and a more respectful attitude towards this subject is needed.

Who does everyone think is more deserving of such Awards - its easy to dismiss Elvis but no NAMES have been put forward as being more deserving. Apart from Ginger Lynn that is -whoever she is LOL

Just for the record Elvis' 10 most successful films in terms of theatrical rentals are (in no particular rank order): Viva Las Vegas; Blue Hawaii; G.I. Blues; Love Me Tender; Jailhouse Rock; Girls, Girls Girls, Loving You; Girl Happy; Roustabout; Tickle Me. I suspect that Fun In Acapulco and Kissin' Cousins would probably be the next 2 on the list. From 1957 thru 1965 Elvis was in the top-10 money-making stars list 6 or 7 times. So it's safe to say that from Love Me Tender thru Tickle Me Elvis was a top box-office attraction! This run spanned 7-8 years (56-58, 60-65) and included 18 films. Ok, he wasn't Spencer Tracy but he was A STAR! So, while an honorary Oscar is probably a bit of a stretch, some type of acknowledgement from the Hollywood community honoring his achievement as an extremely popular and successful film entertainer would not be amiss.

All these blah blah about the Real World , our little forum, let me ask you something, what the heck are you doing here, then? You should be in the Real World , shouldn't you?

Why I don't understand why you post in a messageboard. Somehow , somewhere you are going to be criticize and more when the things you post are more about yourself than about Elvis.

The fact some of us are very successful in the real Elvis world, brings on the inevitable jealousy.

Yes you are really successful. Still don't understand why to inform everybody here of your great success when we already know.

How come you dont post int he German Messageboard anymore? You used to do the same that you are doing here. I guess it is because nobody posts there anymore? 300 users and all of them left except 4 or 5?

The sad thing is you probably believe that. The comments you refer to couldn't possibly be because people have viewpoints different to your own, or because you might come accross as a pretentious bore .........could they ?

Believe me Maurice, if people on this forum are fed up with you it has nothing to do with jealousy.

Before you joined this forum I had never heard of you - oops I'm disappearing up my own backside!

I rest my case (who sais that?)

Maurice - I'm sure that you're a really nice guy but you should try and slow down a little with the old self-promotion.

I will say it once again. I believe that some people are not trying to get this Oscar for Elvis but to garner more publicity for themselves within the Elvis world.

Fri Jun 13, 2003 9:33 pm

Andrew, I telephone a journalist or editor and tell them a story-THEY want my name.
Because it is an ELVIS PRESLEY story they respond favourably. I am mentioned in the story of course.
I tell people What Ive done-getting Elvis into the press on a monthly basis and I am self congladulatory?

Many are strangers to logic around here:-)

But at least my ploy is working I'm getting a lot of attention-off topic are we not?

And once again an Oscar for Elvis' Charisma!!! Got to go now and start another spectacle thread:-)

Honorary Oscar

Sat Jun 14, 2003 4:10 am

As I read all these posts I can't belive my eyes. This is an Elvis Messageboard for and from Elvis fans. And there are people who think Elvis doesn't deserve an Honorary Oscar for his films because, so they claim, his films have no substance or quality. But these films are not worse than other films that are made at that time. These j.... (i dont want to get offensively) have no good arguments, all they can do is make stupid jokes.
Elvis would be proud of such fans. I say: If someone have such fans he need no enemies.

The oscar is for the lifework of an artist and no one deserves it more than Elvis. So I vote for him.

Sat Jun 14, 2003 4:45 am

I never met Elvis or anything but I can only speculate based on the few comments he made about his film career that he would probably be embarrassed getting an honorary Oscar for work which he described in 1972 as making him "physically ill."

Sat Jun 14, 2003 5:00 am

bobbyb

So there is no room for different opinions?

Sat Jun 14, 2003 7:05 am

I am shocked to see a thread with a topic as rediculous as this one has almost reached 100 postings.
How on earth can anyone with 1/3 of a brain think that Elvis should receive an honorary oscar for his mediocre film work?
Most of his films were very bad and the ones that were good, were only good because they were Elvis films for his fans. There are probably only 2 or 3 films that can be mentioned as "okay" for their time.
Because we are Elvis fans, why should his films seem oscarworthy?
What next? Beach Blanket Bingo preserved by the American Film Institute?

You guys seem to think that the Motion Pciture Academy is a sterile righteous institution that honors only the very worthiest (and you guys say Elvis is not worthy) The Oscars get handed out willy nilly often to actors/films not worth it at all.

If they would like to give Elvis Presley one it would probably happen like this: The academy members must vote on it. Then if Elvis is selected, there would be a special scene-montage produced to show during the next Oscar telecast. It would be an segment for an Elvis Tribute at The Oscars coinciding with the statue being given to (Lisa Marie?) on Elvis' behalf.

You grouchy old peckerheads do not want Elvis honored at the Oscars?

What's wrong with ye?

Sat Jun 14, 2003 7:34 am

have not and will not vote for Elvis to receive an oscar because HE DOESN'T DESERVE IT.

WHO DOES DESERVE AN OSCAR?

If Elvis' film career does not deserve a special Oscar then who's career does deserve an Oscar?

Make the comparison. Show me a different dead actor who should get it instead of our favorite dead actor from Memphis.

Being against Elvis is being ANTI-ELVIS. You are either for him or against him.

I am for him. Give him the honorary Oscar. At least we'll get to tune in and see highlights of his films ("That aint tactics, honey. That's just the beast in me"...etc) and hear a room full of movie stars applaud Elvis Presley. Live televised applause for Elvis Presley!

But nooooooo. You people want the applause for Elvis Presley to cease and desist and never happen ever again.

This oscar is a way for Elvis to be appaluded once more - and by the industry he for which he committed so much of his adult life...so much of his time...so much of his voice...his youth ran out while he was making movies...he owns the entire 1960s as the biggest box-office attraction.

You are such hypocrites. I bet you watch the Oscars and during a special tribute to Lassie you sit there thinking, "Lassie! A damn dog. Why don't they give a tribute to Elvis! The King!"

You are such hypocrites. I bet you spend your hard-earned $ on stupid-ass movies like "Dumb and Dumberer" and "Old School" and "Austin Powers" and "Spring Break Nympho Parade" (whatever) but God forbid you say/write something nice about those stupid cheesey Elvis movies.

You are either for him or against him. Many of you folks have clearly expressed which. How sad. Denying him this honor - which he is eligible for - is denying more attention to Elvis. More appreciation. More acceptance. More accolades. More prestige. More accomplishments.

But no. You don't want that to occur.
Fine, just keep him buried in every sense of the word.

Cut.
Fade to black.

Grouchy old peckerheads.

Carolyn, I don't like all the songs Elvis did and I don't like all of his films but give me a break. If not Elvis, who does deserve an oscar tribute? Huh? Why not Elvis?

Because "Harum Scarum" sucks. Because "Fun In Acapluco" sucks. Because "Paradise Hawaiian Style" sucks.

These I agree upon - but his overall cinema legacy should get five minutes of attention at the Oscar Ceremony,
and a space should be made at Graceland to put the staue on display. :D Visitors could see it up close.

No. Give him nothing else. His career on screen isn't worth it like you said.

How about this....Elvis doesn't deserve a One Billion Records Sold Award.
Don't waste the effort promoting this idea. Because there is no RIAA proof that people have made 1 billion purchases and some of those 60s/70s albums and singles suck anyway.

Same attitude.

Your most, Gardener, makes a very valid reason that Elvis should get an Oscar? Are you daft, man? What are you on?
If I knew who were on the honorary oscar list, I would tell you who deserves to be there. I bet there are hundreds of "good" or "great" actors who SHOULD be there.
Your drivel that has gone on and on on this thread has not convinced anyone.
When it comes to music, Elvis should get all the major awards but his movies? Get real!
