New Reggae Tribute Album (Various Artists)

Although not widely known, mainstream artists such as Jim Reeves, the Beatles, and of course Elvis were hugely popular in Jamaica throughout the sixties and seventies. This is reflected in the very first collection of Elvis covers - reggae style! All Shook Up - A Reggae Tribute To The King, pays tribute to the King (in what would have been his 70th year), with this joyous collection of Reggae-fied versions of some of his best-loved hits.

Among the numerous highlights are Chaka Demus & Pliers' irresistible rendition of Don't Be Cruel, Hortense Ellis' Lee Perry-produced Suspicious Minds and Jackie Edwards' superb version of the title track.

Well, it sure is a nice concept for an album.

Haven't come across a Jamaican tribute before !

Of course, without hearing it, giving a mark is a little difficult.

'Is It Rolling Bob' is a great Dylan tribute CD released last year - and every big hit single gets covered in Jamaica as there are no copyright laws there. The Heptones had a big hit with 'Suspicious Minds' back in 1969

Elvis goes Reggae! 'All Shook Up - A Reggae Tribute To The King', the very first collection of Elvis covers, reggae style, is being released by Trojan Records on Nov 21, 2005. Following on from their excellent 2004 CD 'Is it Rolling Bob?: A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan' this album pays homage to The King in what would have been his 70th year. Jamaica has never had song copyright laws and so mainstream artists such as Jim Reeves, the Beatles, and Elvis were hugely popular in Jamaica throughout the 60s and 70s with reggae versions of their hits a common occurrence. In 1969 The Heptones had a smash hit with their reggae 'Suspicious Minds' cover.

'All Shook Up' includes Chaka Demus & Pliers (who made the Australian Top 20 in 1993 with 'Tease Me' & 'Twist & Shout') covering Don't Be Cruel. Other highlights are Hortense Ellis' Suspicious Minds, by super-producer Lee Perry, and Jackie Edwards' superb version of the title track. Interestingly the earlier 'Is It Rolling Bob?' featured a reggae version of 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' a song released by both Elvis & Bob Dylan. Elvis fans may also remember 1991's extraordinary band Dread Zeppelin who toured Australia playing Led Zeppelin songs sung reggae style with an Elvis vocalist! If you saw them live it was a totally weird concept that worked extremely well! So for fans of Elvis, reggae & the bizarre this new CD will be a must-have purchase.
