Compaion Album to Springsteen Autobiography Released 23 Sep
..
‘Chapter and Verse,’ the audio companion to Bruce Springsteen’s extraordinary forthcoming autobiography, will be released Sept. 23 on Columbia Records. The career-spanning compilation will be released four days before Simon & Schuster publishes ‘Born to Run.’ Five of the album’s 18 tracks have not been previously released.
Springsteen selected the songs on ‘Chapter and Verse’ to reflect the themes and sections of ‘Born to Run.’ The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenaged Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with the title track from 2012’s ‘Wrecking Ball.’ The collected songs trace Springsteen’s musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book.
Recordings from Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band feature musicians who would go on to play in The E Street Band. Solo demos of “Henry Boy” and “Growin’ Up” were cut in 1972 shortly before Springsteen began recording his debut album, ‘Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.’
‘Chapter and Verse’ will be available as a single CD and double LP, as well as via digital download and streaming. The package will include lyrics and rare photos. ‘Chapter & Verse’ will be available for preorder on Friday, July 29.

I think "You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover" is the most interesting selection. The other four officially unreleased tracks have all circulated via bootleg (albeit the sound quality will most likely be greatly improved here). I'm a little disappointed that there is only one previously unheard track and nothing new post-1972.drjohncarpenter wrote:"Baby I" from the master reel at last!
I am looking forward to the autobiography audio-book, rumoured to be read by Springsteen himself.
BTW, the release date also happens to be Springsteen's 67th birthday.

Re: Compaion Album to Springsteen Autobiography Released 23
Really sort of a lame compilation. The majority of consumers interested in such a project are members of his devoted fan-base, who undoubtedly have these master recordings many times over. Why add 5 rarities to another compilation? Why not just release a "Tracks 2" set with some of this early stuff along with other vault items from the remainder of his career? I get Landau, Sony, and his publisher wanted some sort of music tie-in, but this is pretty underwhelming in a number of ways.

Well, there are not exactly many parallels between Elvis catalogue management and Springsteen catalogue management.poormadpeter2 wrote:You are an Elvis fan and you have to ask this question?midnightx wrote:Really sort of a lame compilation. Hey, when Elvis Costello did the exact same thing - a musical companion to his autobiography - there were only two unreleased tracks included.minkahed wrote:My thoughts exactly.midnightx wrote:Really sort of a lame compilation. Re: Compaion Album to Springsteen Autobiography Released 23
I look forward to the book as well. I found Carlin's biography of Springsteen from a couple of years back an engrossing read. It will be great to read the stories from Bruce himself. If the chapters are tie in to this CD, the track listing makes perfect sense as they do tie in chronologically with Bruce's life and times. As far as wishing it were TRACKS - Vol. II, I thought you might enjoy reading this:
WikiLeaks reveals new Springsteen contract, with release plans:
On April 16th, Wikileaks published 30,287 documents and 173,132 emails from Sony Music. Amongst the thousands of documents, there are a few revealing details about Columbia’s new deal proposal to the artist Bruce Springsteen. The document goes into a lot of economical details (higher royalty rates, a $31-million advance, a contract extension until June 2027, etc), including details of the benefits the 2005 contract brought to Columbia ($73-million on top of the $101-million paid to Springsteen)
Most interesting for Springsteen fans are the details of the release plans for the next 12 years, which include 13 projects (besides the current Archival Series):
• 4 new studio albums (delivered at least 12 months apart)
• 1 anniversary box set, with 3 CDs, for the Born in the USA album
• 1 anniversary box set, with 3 CDs, for the The River album
• 1 anniversary box set, with 2 CDs, for the Nebraska album
• 1 box set with 3 or 4 discs with unreleased songs (the second volume of Tracks)
• 5 complete live-concert albums
(the box sets and live albums will be released at least 6 months apart)
One of the clauses specifies Springsteen “will have the right to sell downloads of his live concerts directly or through third parties”. And if you’re wondering about the sound quality of the archival series, here is another detail indicated in the clause: “The artist and Columbia are to coordinate marketing and release plans for our respective live albums, with Columbia’s releases intended to be higher quality recordings”.
Considering the archive releases started last November, it may well mean the agreement went forward, though there’s no official confirmation of that.
Great stuff over the next ten or so years. Of course, Bruce will be near 80 by then and I'll be - ah, nevermind.

Re: Compaion Album to Springsteen Autobiography Released 23
I love the Steel Mill stuff, esp. "He’s Guilty (The Judge Song)". This is one song I love to blast riding down the road. I have quite a few Steel Mill boots. I also have a few Castile boots, which are OK, but its stuff I listened to once and rarely go back to. I've always found it amazing that someone actually taped these early castile shows and then actually held on to them. How many other artists have been booted that early in their career?

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with you. It'd be the perfect time to relive '35 years of burning down the road.' Then again, it may come sooner. I guess being an Elvis fan, I always think about anniversies of this or that to tie into a release. Only time will tell.

So, I live a few towns from where Bruce grew up and had the opportunity to meet him at his first signing. It was a great moment! Very nice in person and well done by the Barnes & Noble staff. The book is very interesting and I highly recommend it.

Are you kidding us? That's about $184 in U.S. dollars, and an incredible bargain compared to what other acts of his level charge. Not only that, his shows run between 3 and a half and 4 hours, and his tours have NEVER been corporately-sponsored. Ever. No one else does it like Bruce!YDKM wrote: hmm A$240 for a ticket Geez..... he may be a 'one of a kind' but EXPENSIVE to see!~

That's true of the 10 US shows in August and September. It is not true of virtually all of the approximately 2000 shows that preceded them.drjohncarpenter wrote:his shows run between 3 and a half and 4 hours.
The 4 hour shows were largely a myth - until the last month.
