"And I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'..."

Inspired by a thread started on the ALL ELVIS section, I thought I'd look at the beautiful two-liner that Elvis and Lamar Fike sing backstage at the beginning of ELVIS ON TOUR.

I have never come across a recorded version of this Beautiful folk song, but I DO have a gorgeous version of it by Katie Lee as performed live in the June 4th, 1952 Radio episode of the classic sitcom "The Great Gildersleeve".

I have just this minute spliced it out of the episode and uploaded it to you tube for you all to hear. Simply stunning and tailor made for Elvis!

I present Katie Lee and "My Wanderin'"....

Kind of personal to me. Just before I left for California in the early '90s, I went to a party where a lady sang it with her guitar. I didn't even know her, nor she, me, but it was like she was singing my life. Felt so sad. But resigned to it.

So, hearing Elvis' little run-through always felt different after that.

Great song. Thanks for all the versions, George.

Interestingly, when Lonnie Donegan wrote "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", he based it both musically and lyrically on this old folk song.

Here's what I posted on the other topic, enjoy:

The song is "Wanderin'" and MGM captured Elvis and friend Lamar Fike backstage at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock on Monday, April 17, 1972, singing a bit of the traditional folk tune. It's been done by many artists, such as Eddy Arnold, Johnny Cash, even Andy Griffith in his fantastic 1957 film debut, "A Face In The Crowd."

In fact, it feels like both Presley and Fike are recalling the great scene where Andy sings a bit of the song.

Wanderin' (traditional)
My daddy is an engineer, my brother drives a hack
My sister takes in washin', and the baby balls the jack
An' it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'

I been a wanderin' early and late,
New York City to the Golden Gate,
An' it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'

Been a-workin' in the army, been workin' on a farm
All I got to show is the muscle in my arm
An' it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'

There's snakes on the mountain, eels in the sea,
T'was a red-headed woman, made a wreck out of me
An' it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust,
If the whiskey don't get you, then the women must
An' it looks like
I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'

Does anybody know where Cash's version is lifted from?
