Muhammad Ali - The Steve Allen Playhouse 1963

Wed Jan 29, 2014 10:21 pm

One of my all-time favourite Muhammad Ali [then still Cassius Clay] interviews.

Rather eerily, the subject of being drafted is brought up [over 3 years prior to his refusing to be inducted], to which Ali replies "they took Elvis Presley, didn't they" [skip to 11:55].

But it's pretty much classic Ali all the way; displaying his customary bravado, humour and grace throughout. Hell, even "Big Steve" comes across well.

Enjoy.

Steve Allen was a highly talented man. That he is judged by Elvis fans on one TV episode says far more about Elvis fans than it does Allen.

Few could deliver a line, as perfectly timed and weighted as Steve Allen.

Allen basically belittled Elvis on that episode. Does it mean I didn't think he wasn't talented, of course not. A lot of people didn't know how to handle Elvis in the fifties, with the exception of Milton Berle.
