The great Ray Price passed away earlier today.

I like Ray Price's music very much; he certainly endured and remained productive over many years. His album with Willie Nelson, San Antonio Rose, is a favourite. I'm also fond of Last of the Breed. He was one of country music's greats.

Mr. Price is still with us for now.

Media reports that Country Music Hall of Famer Ray Price has died appear to be in error.

Earlier today, USA TODAY posted an appreciation of Price's career, based on initial information from the singer's family. Given the confusion, that report has been removed.

The country singer, who has been in hospice care at home since Thursday, is suffering complications from pancreatic cancer. Son Cliff Price wrote of his father's death on Facebook, but was not at Price's bedside in Mount Pleasant, Texas, when he posted.

Price's wife, Janie Price, is with her husband and told The (Nashville) Tennessean he is alive. "Our lovable Ray Price is still with us," reads a post on her Facebook page. "When it is the time, there will be an official statement."

OMG, that's so embarrassing. Thanks for posting, Rob. All we can do is pray for him that he won't suffer any longer.

Price's son, Cliff, had confirmed the death Sunday afternoon on his Facebook page, but later retracted the statement. A credible source close to the family also confirmed the death to NewsChannel 5.

Price's wife Janie said he remains in hospice care at his Mount Pleasant home in Texas, where he has been since Thursday.

Seems his son is wanting his inheritance sooner rather than later. :(

The man had a remarkable career and life. One of the last remaining "Kings Of Country Music".....and I'm not referring to the so called country music you hear on the radio today.

Other than a handful of key songs, Ray Price is the kind of country singer who is now almost forgotten in the UK outside enthusiasts. Certainly to someone of my age (39) and younger, he is almost an unknown over here, with the exception of For The Good Times and You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me - and you might be lucky to find 1 or 2 CDs in the local HMV, compared to, say 20 of Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash.

I wrote a post a couple of years back about Sinatra contemporary Dick Haymes and, listening to the songs posted on this thread, I would suggest that Price had a kind of country version of that smooth, deep, resonant sound. The clip that Rocker posted of him singing You're the Best Thing on stage in his eighties is really quite remarkable - if only Elvis could have sung with that much control at half that age. And RKSNashville's post of There's Always Me is really lovely.

While his passing is obviously a sad occasion, hopefully his name in the media will prompt others like myself (for whom Price has somehow been off the radar) to look beyond the couple of songs he is well known for over here in the UK and investigate what appears to be a remarkable body of work.
