Classic Films...cheap!

Tue Nov 26, 2013 6:19 am

I know there are some classic film collector here and Amazon have got quite a lot of interesting items on sale in the USA this week including some classic horror.

The Universal Horror: Classic Movie Archive contains five films. None of them are what one would call top-drawer Universal films. But five films for $13 is a ridiculout price. I remember paying about treble that when the set came out. http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Horror-Classic-Archive-Monster/dp/B000WNHTCC/ref=sr_1_15?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1385435567&sr=1-15

Not horror, but very interesting to film buffs is the Pre-Code Hollywood Collection. This is a three DVD set of six films: The Cheat (1931 remake), Hot Saturday, Search for Beauty, Torch Singer, Merrily We Go To Hell, and Murder at the Vanities. The set normally retails at $50 and is currently $14.

Perhaps most interesting of all is the The Boris Karloff Collection which contains some real beauties: the 1939 Tower of London, The Black Castle, The Climax, The Strange Door, and The Key. All of these for $11.

Also worthy of note is a boxed set of early Bing Crosby films for a mere $10 (should be $50). http://www.amazon.com/Collection-College-Dressing-Mississippi-Stranger/dp/B0041T50J2/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1385435155&sr=1-1&keywords=bing+crosby+collection

Finally there is a set of three Garbo silent films at a real stea with $30 off and down to $9 - my understanding is this is going out of print. If you've ever wondered about silent film but never taken the plunge, you can do much worse than watching the wonderful Flesh and the Devil included here. http://www.amazon.com/TCM-Archives-Collection-Temptress-Mysterious/dp/B0009S4IKG/ref=sr_1_6?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1385435761&sr=1-6&keywords=warner+archive

It's also worth mentioning this set of 17 Elvis films is nearly half price too.

The Temple films have been released on DVD before, but I think only in colourised versions.
Ginger is a Fox film, so you might have a very long wait as they aren't great at releasing obscure films from the vaults.
Little Orphan Annie and Huckleberry Finn, both featuring Green, are kicking around amongst collectors - you're not missing much, believe me. Annie was released on a grey label called Forgotten Hollywood which you might be able to hunt down
VCI released Gasoline Alley in 2008
I would love to see Freckles myself as I have done some work on Tom Brown who is in it, but there is no copy floating around the collecting circuit.
Little Iodine is indeed listed as a lost film

It went back to 53%. At this point, I have no idea what movies I have and the sad part is that I don't think I have watched any of them so I just cannot buy this but it is tempting.
