Filmed A Bit of Paul Anka For Doc Carpenter

Tue Oct 01, 2013 6:20 am

Last year, I caught Paul Anka's show up here in Ontario at Casino Rama, and posted a few pics.

Doc Carpenter made a comment that has stayed with me ... Paul was there from the very start, riding the tour buses throughout the night.
He's one of the last ones standing, still performing at a very high level to large crowds.

I came back to see Paul Anka again this past Saturday evening.
Casino Rama was packed, likely the largest crowd I've ever seen there. The atmosphere was electric.
No one, not even the most hardened gambler with comp tickets, left the show early.

Although I know the show is very well rehearsed, it comes off as natural, spontaneous, and fresh.

I thought of Doc's comments re Anka, and turned my camera to movie mode and caught a bit of this acoustic set. The sound and film quality are
bad, but I'm still glad I have it saved.

There were a lot of Italians in the crowd, and a request was sent up for Ogni Volta, Paul's song from the sixties, when he spent a year living in Italy.
My camera doesn't do his vocals justice.

A few pics to share .... Rama seats 5000, and it was a full, vocal house for a full 2 hour set.

Paul brought out his young son, Ethan, after his final encore. Great gesture, as his son will have some special memories to re live later in life.

Great seats, this lady was sitting beside us.

Like his contemporary, Neil Sedaka, he is sounding great - no-one would listen to that and think this was man in their early 70s. I admire Anka's songwriting very much, and he has done some great recordings (and I really liked Rock Swings too) but there's always a rather inflated ego to get over which makes it difficult for me to actually like him - this was even present in the well-regarded documentary of him from 1962 entitled Lonely Boy:

The influence that film had on a movie such as Elvis on Tour is remarkable.

Funny thing about Paul's legendary ego ... he manages to eliminate it for the 2 hours on stage, becomes very self effacing and humble.

If it is an act, it is a very, very polished act. His infamous rant from years ago, caught on tape, does show that he cares very much about the
finished product on stage. There are very few, if any, technical glitches once this artist hits the stage.

Off to see Lionel Ritchie on the same stage ... he hits the stage in about 45 minutes.

Hope the show is just as good!

I think it probably is an act - and the fact he is without doubt a consummate professional. but his writings and interviews at various points have shown a very different side - and certainly the documentary short captures some of the ego too.
