Forthcoming Beatles Book - Humongous

Tue Jul 23, 2013 4:45 pm

It's been talked about for some time, but now it's available to pre-order - the first book in Mark Lewisohn's 3-volume definitive Beatles Biography is set to hit the shelves in October. Volume one will have a massive 960 pages, which is incredible in itself... but even more incredible is the news that a special "Directors Cut" version will also be released which adds an extra bunch of pages taking the total up to a phenomenal 1856.

I guess it really will be the final word on the subject, and heaven knows Lewisohn's track record speaks for itself, but I question the need for what may turn out to be an almost 6,000 page biography. What remains to be revealed after 50 years that could fill a book of this size? Are there really hundreds or even thousands of stories which people have been sitting on, waiting for just the right moment to tell them?

I suspect that the standard version will be more than enough for most.

This looks amazing. I practically memorized Lewisohn's The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road Years 1962-1970.

Wow now that is huge. I look forward to this book.

Absolutely essential -- Mark Lewisohn is a gifted writer, devoted Beatles fan, and very, very keen on the facts.

I'll be getting the deluxe edition.

You and many others, no doubt. But the question is, as one of the most written about groups in the history of music, what could possibly be in the extended version that is new and worth reading?

"We finally reveal the name of the shop where Paul McCartney bought the eggs which he later scrambled, and which were used as inspiration for the song eventually titled Yesterday."

No need to fret. Lewisohn has proven in all of his published work that he avoids minutiae. The new book will deliver the goods.

I have to say that I too am tempted to get the extended version, and it is precisely because it's written by Mark Lewisohn. I do hope though, that nearer the publication date details are provided about exactly what those extra pages are being used for. If, for example, most of the extra space is taken up reprinting recording session and 'Day by Day' entries - both of which I already have in his other books - along with copious extra notes, then I probably wouldn't be interested. Not because those things aren't important to some people, but because they aren't worth an extra £90 to me.

Interestingly, America gets a (slightly) different title and cover, almost 300 more pages, and has to wait nearly three weeks longer:

Tune In: The Beatles--All These Years, Vol. 1

Book Description
Release date: October 29, 2013

Tune In is the first volume of All These Years -- a highly-anticipated, groundbreaking biographical trilogy by the world's leading Beatles historian. Mark Lewisohn uses his unprecedented archival access and hundreds of new interviews to construct the full story of the lives and work of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

Ten years in the making, Tune In takes the Beatles from before their childhoods through the final hour of 1962 -- when, with breakthrough success just days away, they stand on the cusp of a whole new kind of fame and celebrity. They’ve one hit record ("Love Me Do") behind them and the next ("Please Please Me") primed for release, their first album session is booked, and America is clear on the horizon. This is the lesser-known Beatles story -- the pre-Fab years of Liverpool and Hamburg -- and in many respects the most absorbing and incredible period of them all. Here is the complete and true account of their family lives, childhoods, teenage years and their infatuation with American music, here is the riveting narrative of their unforgettable days and nights in the Cavern Club, their laughs, larks and adventures when they could move about freely, before fame closed in.

I think I'm going to wait before making a decision. With potentially three different variations out there, we definitely need more information.

It's all too much.

The big day is almost here. The regular version comes out tomorrow, which is a bit of a pain for me because in the end I decided to order the extended book (on Kindle) and that isn't going to be published until November 14th. That means that any really meaty bits of information are going to be out there for a month or so before I can even begin reading my copy. Spoilers galore, eh?
