Do most 1st generation tapes exist of all the big names in music ?Are they used to make safety backups?
How can u tell about which film reels are the actual negatives used to make transfers instead of copies?

First generation masters of both film and music exists for most projects in these mediums -- in some instances, original negatives may be lost or damaged, but the studios or production companies who made/own the rights to such, almost always hold the originals. However, the further back we go, the higher the likelihood that certain materials have been lost or destroyed. Especially with regards to less prestigious/affluent companies who may not have had the ability, or foresight, to better store and preserve delicate material. When original negatives are used, the company often informs interested parties (media or consumers) that the original/master has been used, e.g. a blu-ray release may boast a 4K scan from an original negative. Or an album may be re-mixed from the master tapes. This also makes for good P.R., and makes a legitimate first-generation release distinguishable from one that has been manufactured from an inferior source, e.g. McLintock, which had been in the public domain for some time until Paramount secured the rights for the 2007 DVD release, which stated on the cover "From Original Film Elements."

One company that is smart to issue and saved films is Wb. Mod is great for film fans to have otherwise we would never get to own these films.
Paramount is the worse for old films being released on dvd.Idk what their problem is .Wonder if all the original film elements exist of all Shirley Temple's movies?
Another one i hope does mod is Fox they have alot that id like to own on dvd.Ihope the surviving Rko films are safely stored away from heat.

Fox has made a tentative entry into the burn on demand market, as have Sony and, I think, RKO.

Wonder why Paramount doesn't care about their film archives? Ihope pvt collectors know how to store nitrate films. If they don't put them in a archive or sell nobody will ever get to see them and noone can make money.

Paramount don't care about them because there are easier ways to make money, and seemingly the current owners don't care too much about their heritage. All this is very sad, but makes you realise how ambitious WB's restoration programme actually is. And yet people on here judge it from two minutes of a film made in 1972.

How many silent era films exist complete on 35mm ?It's crazy cause of the silent era movie prints that exist are being found in overseas vaults where the Us movie companies didn't care.
I was reading bout early television signal tests during the 20s and Eddie Albert was one of the 1st to do the test to see how it looks the pancake makeup looked funny in the stills from behind the scenes.
I think in the early stages of film they didn't know how much makeup to use why they look funny on early films.
The 2 biggest stars in the early 1917 Were Charlie Chaplin and Baby Marie Osborne her films are lost except Little Mary Sunshine. It is sad to see movie ads in old film magazines and find out the film is lost.
Peter could more movies exist &not be lost? How many pvt collectors are still alive that may have them?
How much does it cost to restore old films?
Have you ever seen the Lon Chaney sr movie Where he is a magician who lost his legs he bound them behind him to do this role that would hurt wonder how he stood the pain?
