HMV - Sad News
It appears according to news reports that the administrators are being called in. Sad times if HMV disappears from our high street, not only for 4500 workers who will lose their jobs, but the knock-on effects within the music industry of there being no outlet on the high street for such goodsas CDs, DVDs etc. Of course, the calling in of administrators doesn't automatically mean closure, but the likelihood is that it will do, sadly.

Sad, but not surprising...given the huge increase use of internet downloads.

I better get my £20 voucher spent quick then but of course that's just a minor point,I feel bad for the staff and that TESCO,ASDA etc will be the only retail outlet in my area for CD's.

Re: HMV - Sad News
According to various analysts etc, there will be bids for various parts of HMV, so it may survive yet, but no doubt not in its present form. I'm sorry to say while the rise of Amazon etc has hit HMV, its downfall has been a sheer lack of common sense. If you're appealing to browsers, stock as many different titles as you can - not 20 copies of the same thing, especially when it comes to back catalogue items. That type of decision not only limits appeal, but it stops people going in week in week out because they know exactly what is in there.

Re: HMV - Sad News
I know they have overheads to pay with the shops but HMV store prices are way too high, that couldn't have helped matters.
Sad news though.

HMV was always a great store to browse - well, "back in the day" - but not a great place to shop due to ridiculous pricing.

You missed your chance, they aren't accepting them any more. That may change, but the timing of this - right after Xmas - means that there are going to be a lot of anxious people right now.norrie wrote:I better get my £20 voucher spent quick then
HMV hasn't known what sort of shop it wanted to be, for some time. First it sold music, then it sold music and videos (and later DVDs etc), followed by video games, then books, then technology... Lately they've been stocking second-hand products too. I think that if it is to stand a chance of keeping a high street presence then it needs to concentrate on what it does best, which is brand new music and films. If I want an iPad or an iPod dock there are electrical stores I can shop at and probably get a better price, and if I need a second hand CD there are already specialist places where I can get them for peanuts.

Will it start at all? There's no guarantee that the brand is disappearing, and they still have an Internet presence so maybe they'll just ship the stock out to a warehouse and sell them via the website.londonflash wrote:When does the clearout start?

The stock might not be owned by hmv at all but still by the suppliers, so possibly no sale even if the shops go.

Re: HMV - Sad News
Wouldn't the suppliers want their stock back now, if that was the case? If they actually went into liquidation, might they not have a job getting it returned at that point? I'm just thinking out loud really.poormadpeter wrote:The stock might not be owned by hmv at all but still by the suppliers, so possibly no sale even if the shops go.

Re: HMV - Sad News
No, I don't think so. If the stock is sale or return, then it's not owned by HMV in the first place, and so presumably doesnt count as an asset. There does seem to be some optimism today that HMV will continue into the future in some form, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Does this mean you will no longer be able to complain about new Elvis CD releases since you have no way of purchasing them ?

Re: HMV website; gone forever?
It will be a shame to lose a record/ cd shop such as Hmv - its the only Cd retail shop in my home town - Great shame to lose such a good retailer esp for my and many Elvis cds / dvds I have purchased thru out my life time - Fingers crossed that many jobs wont be lost due to this tragic news -
Good Luc to all employees who may be affected by this -

Re: HMV website; gone forever?
As far as I remember, the HMV stores found in most soul-less UK shopping centres only featured, mainly 'greatest hits' compilations anyway, all at inflated prices. They were great in the 70's and 80's when there weren't many other similar outlets or no internet, but they got greedy with their prices whilst Amazon and the like, were more realistic.TCB-FAN wrote:Tony.. wrote:Tried to log on to their site today but it seems I was too late..... goodbye old friend.

Soon our high streets really will just be full of pound shops, kebab shops, charity shops and third rate take-aways for the late night pissheads leaving one of the few remeaining British pubs.

Re: HMV - Sad News
HMV hasn't failed because of the internet and the computer age, but due to some bad management decisions that have come back to haunt them, and then a failure to confront its problems before it was too late. Their website is a shambles compared to most online retailers, with not enough categories to browse through and genres lumped together making that browsing experience a chore. In shops, they should have stuck to what they were good at - CDs and DVDs - because, by giving half the floorspace to other goods, there wasn't enough variety of stock to lure the pockets of browsers. In other words, a lack of common sense has killed HMV. Possibly.Bodie wrote:More job losses.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, the website is down at the moment - but I'm guessing it will be up again at some point with a notice saying web orders not being taken at the moment. It seems there is hope of the brand continuing with a much reduced number of shops - and perhaps that's what it needs to get back on its feet again.
I have to say that I think many of the complaints about prices are somewhat exaggerated. There is a relatively large amount of DVDs in the two shops in my city that are priced between £3 and £5, and the speciality genres certainly were the same prices as amazon (not marketplace) in many cases, with their classical material often really quite cheap - I got the nine Bruckner symphonies for £18 just a few days ago, not bad for a 9 cd set from warner. The Elvis MSG release was also the same price in the shops as on amazon.
EDIT: Notice of administration now on the website.

Yep,tried to spend it this morning only to be told rather abruptly that "were not taking vouchers" before I even got to the counter."But you owe me £20 worth of goods that someone else has already paid for" I replied."I owe you nothing" I slightly regret my backchat as I stormed off.The Pirate wrote:You missed your chance, they aren't accepting them any more.
