If I had to choose just one Laurel and Hardy film to show someone, it would be this:

Sons of the Desert (1933)

Cool thanks for the location details, just google mapped it and the surrounding area certainly has changed! There is a plaque on the stairs and the stairs themselves are called the Music Box steps. And the Laurel and Hardy Park opposite it...even my wife laughed at this short even though she doesnt usually get most of the humour

During this past year I bought everything they ever put out (except Utopia), but haven't yet watched them all so I can't give an honest opinion of what I think their top movies are.
My brother is a Charley Chase and Laurel & Hardy fan so I think I'll sit down with him sometime this week and watch Sons of The Desert.

Thanks for that info, HoneyTalkNelson, but living in the U.S. I'm hoping they'll release that same version of Utopia for Region 1 players.

There are so many wonderful Laurel & Hardy shorts, I just can't pick my favorite.

Three that immediately come to my mind are "Brats", "Battle Of The Century" and "The Finishing Touch".

It's a very hard task choosing favourite L&H films. The list is forever changing. There are however some solid favourites that never move from the top spots. Here's just SOME of my own favourites:

FEATURE FILMS:

SONS OF THE DESERT - a finely crafted farce, brilliantly scripted and acted throughout. Charley Chase is great in the role of an obnoxious lodge-brother that is so far removed from his usual blundering character that he's barely recognisable.

FRA DIAVOLO - a beautiful piece of cinema - as dazzling as it is hilarious. The romantic sub-plot with Dennis King and Thelma Todd is just as enjoyable as the brilliant comedy of Stan and Ollie. Great costumes and beautiful memorable music too. Perhaps my favourite L&H movie of them all.

PACK UP YOU TROUBLES - About the point, or rather just before, when Stan and Ollie headed down a more child-friendly route with their comedy. Before it was all quite risque and seedy with marriage fails, secret affairs, drinking illicit substances, vagrancy etc Hereafter it started to become more family friendly. But here we have a taste of both, including some genuinely harrowing child abuse scenes which are soon overcome (also violently) before heading into some of their most charming comedy ever!

SILENT SHORTS:

BIG BUSINESS - as mentioned before, pure hilarity as Stan, Ollie and the mighty Finn destroy each other's goods in a string of events that get increasingly more hilarious!

WRONG AGAIN - quite an hilarious setting with a giant misunderstanding culminating in Stan and Ollie delivering a horse called "Blue Boy" (instead of the famous painting called "Blue Boy") to a mansion and positioning it atop a piano!! Brilliant!

DUCK SOUP - NOT the famous Marx Brothers classic. But perhaps the earliest teamwork Stan and Ollie ever did. In their pre-teaming days, they were usually pitted against eachother as enemies. Here they are allies. They have different character names and Ollie has a beard and is disheveled, but the partnership is there in all its glory. Based on HOME FROM THE HONEYMOON, a stage sketch written by Stan's father back in the music hall days, the boys Americanise the plot and deliver a fine short!

SOUND SHORTS

HELPMATES - basically just the boys (with a brief but unforgettable Blanch Payson cameo), this one is pure mayhem as the boys attempt to fix the house back up after a wild party. One of the best tragi-comedies ever made!

HOG WILD - The boys attempt to put up a radio antenna. Nuff said!

THEM THAR HILLS and TIT FOR TAT - the only example of a L&H film with a sequel. Both feature the same cast and both are truly remarkable!

Special mention must go to the likes of TOWED IN A HOLE, BUSY BODIES, THE BOHEMIAN GIRL, THAT'S MY WIFE, PERFECT DAY and WAY OUT WEST.

Wonderful post, Swingin-Little-Guitar-Man - thanks for that!

As for the feature films, right now I would choose "Blockheads".

Just got through watching SAPS AT SEA. Some GREAT wordplay in that one. So sad it was the last of the classic Hal Roach Studios era.

That's true. I just finished bringing my collection in chronological order and already watched the first ten shorts... already some nice scenes in there, but they got bigger and better with time.
A shame their first major hit, "Hats Off", is lost and the first part of "The Battle Of The Century" is missing. But hey, hope springs eternal.
