Was the supplemental texts applied to the silent films at the time of their releases, or were they added years later as with the piano audio?

Was the supplemental texts applied to the silent films at the time of their releases, or were they added years later as with the piano audio?

No, they were all supplied at the time of the film as part and parcel of the film, so they shouldn't be viewed as ironic or sarcastic efforts by modern writers/viewers. Hitchcock started his career as an intertitle writer.
