Finally . . . a new film!

Fri Oct 05, 2012 12:36 am

I'm going to the movies! I just saw the trailer, and I'm going back to The Movies - my first trek to a theater since the Aurora shooting. I have a reason! It better be good. It's arriving in November.

Any thoughts from our film experts? Or just folks who like good, real films. (Not action-adventure, nor chick-flicks, nor cartoon adaptations . . . nor October-Scary-Sequels -- A REAL FILM!)

I agree, rjm.

I'm very much looking forward to Speilberg's Lincoln. It has all the makings of either a great film or a noble disaster...I'm hoping for the former.

The cast is superb: Day-Lewis, Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field, David Strathairn. That's about as good as anyone could hope for. The narrative looks to be interesting: the fight over the 13th Amendment. Good, fertile dramatic territory. From the bits that we've seen, it looks like it'll be a very good looking film as well. Whether or not all of the elements come together in a meaningful way, we shall see.

I've seen quite a few films this year that were highly anticipated and have been disappointed by most of them. I'm just not all that keen on sequels and superheroes. I hope this will be the movie of the year.

BTW, just for fun - my quick takes on the movies of 2012 that I've seen thus far:

Prometheus : From Earth to Meh...
The Dark Knight Rises: Catwoman steals a good show
The Avengers: 2 Dimensional comic-book inanity
The Bourne Legacy: Legacy to some, second hand to others
The Master: A Pretentious snore
Lawless: A Bloody Mess

The trailer shows us a handsome, major film.

Daniel Day-Lewis is an astounding actor. He cherry-picks his roles, and only does them sporadically.

"Lincoln" is directed by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, American playwright and screenwriter who captured the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993 for his play "Angels in America."

The concern is that Spielberg will fall into his usual trap of mawkish sentimentality at some point along the way after delivering something of real value (eg. "Schindler's List"). I hope not.

As for some sentimentality, well, Spielberg can't help but BE Spielberg. (In Schindler's list, I found that refrain with the young girl in the red clothing, highlighted in a black & white film, to fall into that category, and it was unnecessary. I immediately thought he was working too hard to tug the tears, and he didn't have to.)

That said, I never get bored in even his longest films. I can only hope this is a great one. With his little faults and all, he's a titanic director. {But not the director of Titanic. ;) }

I see Lincoln here kind of refreshingly underplayed a bit. We'll see.

I will be happy to go into a darkened theater again, and not be afraid. Which is ironic, since Lincoln "got it" IN A THEATER! But I'll get back on that horse. (Funny that after the Colin Ferguson shooting on the LIRR, I moved back to New York shortly afterward for half the year, and took, I think, the same train - or a very similar one. They might have cancelled the train number. Didn't scare me at all.)

Lewis is great especially in There Will Be Blood.
Maybe Spielberg won't ruin it.

Spielberg is one of my favorite directors of all time and rarely does he make a bad film.

I am very much looking forward to seeing Lincoln.

No Jimmy.

That's Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter that came out a few months ago and was director by Tim Burton.

We are all talking about Steven Spielberg's movie Lincoln that will come out in a few months.

Dude, you were fished in this time.
As I was typing that out I laughed because
I knew you would call me on it.

By the way Jerry Lewis' son has done well for himself.
One of the best actors around.

Well tonight I finally saw Lincoln. And as much as I wanted to like it,
I didn't. From moments that almost bring tears to sheer boredom it
became difficult to watch. Even though I like her in other movies,
I think it would have been better without Sally Field. I suppose she
looked the part.

D.D. Lewis* was great like always.

Zero Dark Thirty was my favorite film last year. The last 45 minutes were as gripping as anything I ever saw.

"Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter" doesn't sound so bad now, huh...?

I saw it when it came out, and I had a grand time! It was about the daily, dirty grind of politics, but I thought it showed how important and even exciting that can be. "Honest Abe" had to lie and bribe his way to doing the right thing and I got teary!

My humble opinion. :)
