Yes, and he was not alone.

First off, the facts show Tony Perkin's 1957 single was actually NOT a "huge hit."

His maiden RCA effort reached #24 on the pop charts for exactly one week, its debut on the top 40.

One listen shows how Elvis' 1961 master closely followed his labelmate's arrangement.

Interestingly, both Nick Noble and Joel Grey also had out vocal versions of the song in 1957, but Noble's only reached #37 and Grey's missed the Top 40 altogether, despite some ad muscle by Capitol.

Note also that Grey was one of two artists that cut "Shoppin' Around" before Elvis' 1960 album cut.

Thanks for your input. However I don't believe I ever said it was "a huge hit".

Moonlight Swim was a huge hit in New Zealand.

The universe is a little bigger than the USA.

Well you two be careful in the showers afterwards. That Perkins is a dab-hand with an 18 inch butcher knife!

The Joel Gray version of Shoppin' Around is downright awful. Elvis nailed the song.

Don't worry I won't steal your crown.

It's a stone cold fact that Perkins Moonlight Swim was a huge hit in New Zealand.

Oh, the Doc doesn't recognise anything as a hit if it's not mentioned by Joel Whitburn !

So far you have given us exactly zero "stone cold facts" regarding your "clarification."

What chart? Chart entry? Record label? Date? Highest chart position? Sales?

Please, do show us -- you always insist others do the same.

Put up or shut up, Mr Wriggle.

There were no charts as such in New Zealand at that time.

However Moonlight Swim was a huge hit in NZ

I was here you were not.

Roy Shuker, Understanding Popular Music (New York: Psychology Press, 1994)

Presented in the larger context of cultural studies, Understanding Popular Music is a commendably comprehensive analysis not only of 20th-century popular music itself but also of its major cultural theorists. Roy Shuker (media studies, Massey Univ., New Zealand) knowledgeably traces and treats almost every aspect of popular music, among them performance and recording technologies, the music industry, the music press, gender implications, political implications; and visual representations, both pre- and post-MTV.

The Lever Hit Parade was not chart based...there was no chart.

The songs were selected by the host Selwyn Toogood who picked what he thought was the most popular at the time. many great records were excluded because he thought they were too sexy or noisy or he just never liked them.

This exclusion included Hard Headed Woman, Mack The Knife. Splish Splash, The Twist and numerous others.

The Lever Hit Parade was broadcast on the old fuddies radio network and not the teenage network (ZM today).

Palmerston North was recently voted the most boring city in NZ. A few years ago John Cleese called it "the most perfect place to commit suicide.. You would liken it to a mid western USA town of 50,000 population.

Roy Shuker would be the most obscure, unknown music commentator in New Zealand
